I work alongside key stage 1 children aged between 5 and 6 years old. I establish a respectful, professional relationship with children by communicating clearly and using the child’s name (finding out/learning them if not known). I adapt my behaviour appropriately when communicating with children and use my body language and actions to help me. I always get down to the child’s level when speaking, so that they do not feel intimidated. I never shout. I make myself approachable by smiling and being friendly, also I have found that firm ground rules and mutual respect from the start has helped. I discuss what I expect from them and visa versa so the children (have a sense) know I’m listening to them. I always listen to the children and if its inappropriate timing I make time to listen and talk things through at break time/lunchtime. When children become quiet and out of character I make conversation by asking questions like: ‘how are you?’, ‘What’s the matter?’…

It is also important that we are confident and have the ability to identify and sort out any conflicts with children, young people and adults so that others can trust us. Another principle would be being consistent and fair towards other people as they will at some point need to rely on us; this means to stay professional at all times. Staff members in school will need to feel that the workplace is a fair where everyone is the same and expected of as the same level of others and to always keep confidentiality as appropriate. When managing disagreements with children and young people you should make sure that everyone involved has their say. Otherwise one child may feel victimised. The rules should be lay down and it should be made clear that there will be consequences for anyone who breaks the rules. It may be that both parties are at fault. For example if two young people get into a fight and child A (Max) says child B (Daniel) hit them first, you would say that max should not have hit Daniel but Daniel should have come to a teacher instead of taking matters into his own hands. It is important that the children understand where it went wrong and what they should have done in that situation. Communication is very important in any…
