The first piece of legislation is the United Nations on the Rights of the Child 1989 (UN, 1989). This was ratified in 1991 by the UK. Although different British governments have said they are bound by this Convention it has not become part of English law.
Safeguarding children in England
Working Together to Safeguard Children (2010) sets out how organisations and individuals should work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the Children Act 1989 and the Children Act 2004. We will look at the Children Acts later. This document covers the following areas:
A summary of the nature and impact of child abuse and neglect How to operate best practice in child protection procedure

Donâ€TMt dismiss it but say to the child you will speak to them later. However, make sure that you do as the child will be reluctant to trust a responsible adult again. If you have chance, before you speak to the child discuss it with a senior colleague without mentioning the childâ€TMs name. Always bear in mind the schoolâ€TMs policy and procedure where safeguarding is concerned, and confidentiality.
Below are some of the things you should do when a child makes a disclosure of abuse:
Assure the child it isnâ€TMt their fault
Listen to what is being said
Reassure the child but tell them that you may have to tell a senior staff member Listen without asking questions
Stay calm
Things you shouldnâ€TMt do when a child makes a disclosure of abuse:
Act in disbelief or shocked
Question the child
Criticise the alleged perpetrator
Make assumptions or draw your own conclusions
What to do when you have finished listening to the child:
Make factual notes of what was said, donâ€TMt make assumptions Keep notes youâ€TMve made they may be needed later
Record details of names, times,
