Explain how own practice can affect the development of children: My role as a nursery teacher at Zeeba Daycare can have a very big impact on the development of children in my classroom. It is well known that children often observe what others do and many times will imitate actions they have observed, so it is very important that I set a good example and be a good role model as I could set a good foundation for the development of a child’s behaviour and morals. It is important to teach children that all people are important and valuable, no matter what their gender, race, ability or background is and that it is important to respect and support others that are different to us. Therefore I can affect their development in many good ways by giving them a good example to follow. It is very essential that any person working with children and young people has an absolute duty to safeguard and protect children/young people from harm at all times, even if this means breaking confidences by sharing information in order to protect a child and dealing with the very difficult situations that can arise. It is very important to know and understand the policies and procedures that are in place to ensure that you know who to report to if there is early intervention required or a serious case should arise and the different procedures to follow. Working with children/young people I need to be confident and competent in providing all necessary aspects of care at all times. This gives confidence to the child/young person and their parents. I have to make sure that my behaviour, relationships with children/parents/staff, language as well as materials, resources and activities are appropriate for the children in our classroom. Using inappropriate resources for a child’s age and activities that are not suited for them might discourage a child or potentially harm that child (physically or mentally) as they grow and affect their development in a negative way. As a child carer I need to be able to understand which activities will help children develop appropriately as well as being able to support children in a range of different situations. E.g. If I set out an activity with balancing beams in a classroom where there are babies between the ages of 8 – 15 months, I could risk the chance that many of the children will fall down, injure themselves or possible refuse to participate in the activity in the future as they could be frightened of it. I need to be aware that children of this age would normally be crawling/ walking or just learning how to walk would be better suited to be using balancing blocks instead where a carer could easily give better support and encouragement with such an activity. I have to be able to respect their abilities and individual children’s personal needs. As a child carer it is important to understand that every child develops at their own pace and in their own unique ways. Having a good understanding of child development is essential to be able to plan, prepare activities for and promote every child’s individual development and to ensure the best possible outcome for each child. Understanding the Early Years Foundation Stage is very important for good practice at work, if I do not provide a good practice at work then the children will not be developing appropriately. It is important to record written observations, assessments and take photographic evidence of each individual child and to update their learning journeys to monitor a child’s progress and development throughout their time at nursery. I need to do risk assessments, and check lists to ensure the environment I provide for the children to play and learn in is safe at all times too. By following a child’s development I will be able to plan, prepare and adapt activities that not only meet their needs but also challenge them when doing an activity. Children need to be challenged, if the activity that is set out for them is to easy they will quickly become...
