Explain How Long And Long Term Planning
Long term planning is used at the start of the year. The practitioners use this to ensure that all seven areas of learning are included throughout the year. The seven areas of learning include Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity, Language Literacy and Communication Skills, Mathematical Development, Welsh Language Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Creative Development. Practitioners can overlook this planning to see if all areas are being used regularly in lessons. At this stage practitioners are not fully connected to all children so individual learning needs are not included with this planning. Medium term planning follows on from long term planning in more detail. Medium term planning normally fits in to connect the long term planning and sort term planning. They are normally half term or termly which concentrates on one topic or theme at a time, for example Christmas. It includes activities designed to promote experiences. Some flexibility needs to be brought in so there is no stop to the children’s learning on a topic they are really interested in, this happens in Montessori schools where their planning is based children’s interests. The plans include adult led activities and opportunities for the children to explore the role of the adult. The short term planning gives opportunity for practitioners to observe and listen to the children so that activities are more to their individual needs.
