Exercise – Paper Calculation for Sheet Fed Offset
a. Find the paper cost if the customer needs 55,000 copies of 145mm x 205mm flyers, printed on 100gsm simili paper, 25” x 35.5” – RM100 per ream. Add 2% for the paper wastage.
b. Find the paper cost if the customer needs 200,000 copies of 6” x 6” folding boxes, printed on 350gsm Grey back Art Card. The cost of board is RM115 per packet (100’s) and stock available is 20” x 28”. Add 2% for the wastage.
c. What is the total quantity of paper needed to print 35,750 copies of poster size 508 x 762 mm. The available paper stock in the store is 25” x 35.5”. Add 3% for wastage.
d. What is the total quantity of paper needed to print 145,090 copies of Folder size 381 x 508 mm. The available paper stock in the store is 31” x 43””. Add 2% for the wastage.
e. How many pieces of stock 5” x 8“ may be cut out of a parent size, 25” x 35 ½ “?
f. How many 14” x 18” sheets may be cut out of a 31” x 43” basic sheet?
g. How many 5.5” x 5.5” sheets may be cut out of a 17” x 22” basic sheet?
h. Self-cover manual books, size A4 and number of page are 160 pages. The quantity order is 36,897 copies. Calculate the number of reams required for the job and stock cost. (Available stock size is 25” X 37” – Simili 80gsm, RM85 per ream) Add 3% for the wastage.
i. To print weekly magazine (4 issues per month), size A4 and number of page are 128 pages (text). The quantity order is 45,500 copies per issue. Calculate the no of ream required for one month consumption? Available stock size is 25” X 37”, (will produce 16 pages A4). Add 3% for the

Determine the number and cost of plate required for 68,500 copies of Annual Report 128-page (cover and text used same stock), size A4 portrait, printed four-color process. The life span of plate is 50,000 impressions. The price of plate is RM 40.00 per piece. Assume a B1 four colour press (720 x 1020mm) capable of printing 8pp to view will be used (16-page per section).
By using a SPANKS formula, calculate quantity and cost of ink according to a job given below:
A pamphlets consists of halftone and text, both sides printing. The size of the job is 297mm x 420mm printed in four color process on glossy art paper 130gsm. Quantity order for this job is 51,350 copies and to be printed by offset litho. (15 marks)
