My Sister the Mentor

I have chosen Felecia Brown my oldest sister as mentor because she is supportive, ambitious and reliable. She is a Systems Analyst for Pepsi America Corporation in Schaumburg, IL. She has a way of inspiring you to be the best at whatever it is you do in life and in your career. She has inspired me to continue my education in nursing so I can advance my career as a nurse. Through this you will come to know why I’ve chosen her as a mentor. First, she is supportive because when our mother passed, I was living an apartment with her and caring for her until her death. I couldn’t go on living there after she had past. I was very sad and emotional wreck. I couldn’t concentrate on work or pay the bills. My sister stepped in and moved my kids and I in with her. I became very depressed after my Mom death. I didn’t know what was going on with me or what to do with myself. My sister was there for me again to advise and support me. She had lost her husband about 5 years prior to us losing our Mom. She dealt with that loss and showed me how to cope with this loss. Also, I have a daughter away at college. She calls my sister often for her guidance and support.
Secondly, her ambitiousness shows while working at Pepsi she has taken advantage of their continuing education program to get her advancement as the Systems Analyst. She started out there about 12years ago as a data entry specialist. She went to school at night and worked during the day. All while taking care of her son and husband at that time. She has a Bachelor degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management and a Bachelor degree in Business Administration. Also, while at Pepsi she has help to form the African-American Business Opportunity Program which she is the Co-Chairman. In this program they set-up job fairs and help with the selection for internship. Through this program her employers had a chance to see her in action. Finally

A stereotype is a predisposed idea about a group of people based on limited information you have heard or seen and assumed to be true about every individual in that group. In “Don’t Call Me a Hot Tamale,” Judith Ortiz Cofer describes how being Puerto Rican affects her every day. People make rude comments about her, based on her ethnicity, and without knowing her. Cofer describes how she was stereotyped in different situations. From being compared to a Latina character in a play to having her culture misinterpreted. She does not fight against this prevaricate ideas. Instead, she travels around the United States and reads from her books and poetry trying to clear stereotypes about Latinos. As Cofer describe “replace them with a more interesting set of realities” (Cofer 666). However, individuals are still being exaggerated categorized according to their culture.…

On April 26th 2002, I learned a big lesson which I will never forget in my life. It was a normal day at the house; my little brother and I were playing and running around as brothers do. My mum was busy doing her weekend cleaning. She wasn’t paying attention to Sean and me as we continued to argue and play. Soon we realized that mum was too busy to notice what my brother and I were up to. So we decided to throw football which was never allowed in the house, I would soon discover why my mum had this rule. My brother and I started throwing the football, cutting corners, and jumping over obstacles that happened to be in the way, we were having fun all the while my mum was busy cleaning the bird cages she never even knew. As we were playing, my brother threw the football so high; I jumped over the dining table to catch the ball. The next thing I knew I was falling to the ground, blood was everywhere. All I could do was cry and hold my foot I wasn’t really sure what had happened. My mum came and wrapped my foot up as she said “you’re very lucky that you didn’t lose your toe!” then we headed the emergency room. The pain was so unbearable! When we got to the emergency room, my mum went to the desk to sign me in. I decided to look at my toe, it was barely hanging on; I could even see the bone! Hour after hour passed as we waited to the doctor, it almost seemed like an eternity, then, finally the called my name to a small privacy room. In fact the doctor took care of me and gave me some pain killers. Later I discovered why mum had that rule not to throw football in the house. I really learned a lesson that day. Also I advise my little brother to put a stop to…

Some of her examples and the things Mair compared and contrasted throughout this essay were quite comical. She wrote about how she asked a local advertiser why he have people with disabilities in his ads, and the advertiser replied, "We don't want to give people the idea that our product is just for the handicapped." (Mair). Mairs reply to this absurdity with, "If you saw me pouring puppy biscuits, would you think these kibbles were only for the puppies of the cripples?"…

As a child you are taught to always tell the truth, but sometimes lying can be justified. There are many instances in when lying may be ok, especially if it is just a “little white lie.” Many times you lie to spare someone’s feelings. For example, if your wife asks if she looks fat in something, if you think she does and you tell her yes, you are going to hurt her feelings. And she will probably not speak to you for a week. If someone has just got their hair cut and you think they look ridiculous, you are not going to tell them that, because you would make them feel badly about the way they look. Sometimes you need to lie in order to not get in trouble and it doesn’t hurt anyone else. For instance, if you you’re your wife you’d be home by 9, and don’t get home until 11. It’s a lot easier to say you got stuck in traffic, rather than had a beer with friends. She won’t get hurt and it avoids a fight. Another example, when you are a teenager and you stay out late, you try to sneak it without getting caught. If your parents ask what time you get home, you lie and say 10 o’clock so you don’t get grounded for staying out past curfew. It is also justifiable to lie if you are in fear of being harmed. For instance, if you are being robbed and someone asks you a question that answering truthfully would get you harmed, then you are absolutely justified to lie. Also, if you are afraid of heights, you may pretend to be busy the weekend your friends are going sky-diving. On occasion it is acceptable to lie to a child. Specifically if that child asks you if there is such thing as Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. You do not want to be the one to ruin a childhood by telling them the truth. Also, there are some scary things in life that children don’t need to know about yet. So you are lying to protect your child. Lying may not always be the right thing to do, but at times it is the best.…
