Examples Of Selflessness In Beowulf
Even though it may appear Beowulf acts for selfish reasons, or to increase his fame, he is actually committed to justice proving his selflessness.
Throughout the book, Beowulf goes out of his way to help people even with all the conflicts making it hard on him. In the beginning of the book, he comes to the Danes and he offers to help. It states, “It was the end of their voyage and the Geats vaulted / over the side, out on to the sand, / and moored their ship” (224-226). From a faraway land came Beowulf and even though he necessarily did not know these people he came to help. He was prepared and ready to help, and ready to serve justice. This proves the selflessness because he goes out of his way to people who he doesn’t even know just to come

As the monster Grendel was terrorizing Herot, Beowulf sets out to help Hrothgar. It can be suggested that Beowulf is seeking fame and glory that will, in a sense, give him eternal life. Beowulf, before fighting Grendel's mother, proclaims, "Each of us will come to the end of this life on earth; he who can earn it should fight for the glory of his name; fame after death is the noblest of goals." After cutting off Grendel's claw and head he pursues the monster to make sure that he is dead, and when Grendel's mother seeks revenge he doesn’t hesitate to fight her. He originally sets out to help Hrothgar and does not intend to leave the quest unfinished. Again, near death, he thanks God for all the treasure and requests to have his tomb at the water's edge, so sailors can see it and remember it as 'Beowulf's…

Beowulf has many heroic characteristics. When Beowulf went to the Land Of Danes, he went to kill Grendel. He didn't do it for the fame or the power. He wanted to kill him to help the Geats. He felt as if it was right, he says “They had in remembrance my courage and might. Many had seen me come safe from the conflict.” He never expected anything from anybody after anything he would do.…

First, readers should agree Beowulf acts altruistically for the people of Hrothgar’s kingdom because he sacrifices himself to defeat Grendel. Beowulf proves his altruism when he says, “…That I, alone and with the help of my men,/ may purge all evil from this hall (165-166). Here, Beowulf says he wants to defeat the monster Grendel so the people of Herot will not be in danger. Is this not altruism? Is this not representative of hero-like qualities? Beowulf knows he can defeat Grendel and stop the killing of Hrothgar’s people, but when Beowulf has to defeat Grendel’s mother so she could avenge her son’s death, he is not so certain he can win. “…no sword could slice her evil/ skin, that Hrunting could not hurt her…” (599-600). Here, Beowulf almost dies when he fights Grendel’s mother since his sword is useless, and so what benefit does he have in fighting her besides preventing her from taking Grendel’s place and killing the people of Herot? The reader can plainly see that Beowulf is acting out of altruism, acting for others, not himself.…

Loyalty is one of the most important qualities a man can have, the Anglo-Saxons possessed this quality and kept it sacred. Beowulf's honor and loyalty saved Hrothgar country and his beloved people. "Nor have I see a mightier man-at-arms on this earth than the one standing here: unless I am mistaken , he is truly noble. This is no mere hanger - on in a herds armor." (244- 251) This quote is showing the loyalty Beowulf beholds and that the people cherish so much. Beowulf stands upon others with his loyalty to his king. He drops everything and helps Hrothgar each time he needs him , conquering Grendel, his mother, and the dragon. However not only Beowulf is loyal in the text, almost every other character in Beowulf is loyal to someone, in their own way. Beowulf most importantly emphasizes the significance of loyalty. Beowulf could have if he was willing too could've seized the throne from Hygelac or Hrothgar, but he is much too loyal to ever betray his friends and battle against them. This…

Stop and think for a moment, what is your idea of a hero? What characteristics make up this hero? When reading the story Beowulf it can be discovered that a hero has strength, loyalty, and courage to endure all of their battles. There are qualities that make this epic poem have more Christian aspects, such as when Beowulf gave thanks to God for his safety and rewards in battle, the character Grendel is used symbolically as descendant of Cain, and Beowulf is a Christ like figure.…

The first of Beowulf’s motivations is his sense of duty. “My people have said…that my duty was to go to the Danes’.” (Beowulf, line 444) Beowulf is not free to do whatever he would like. He is obligated to help because his people believe that he is obligated. His duty is directly linked to his people’s wishes. Beowulf’s people recognize that he is gifted with immense strength. Because the Danes need help and Beowulf is the only one capable of doing so, he must aid the Danes.…

This shows that Beowulf came to Hrothgar’s kingdom to fight his demons out of selflessness without anyone calling him. Beowulf is very honorable because he comes from far seas to fight for Hrothgar’s kingdom not for the fame or fortune but to help the people; moreover he had heard of Grendel through different stories and wanted this demon gone from that kingdom. Beowulf, and Anglo-Saxon hero, comes to Hrothgar seeking to fight the ferocious demons with his mighty strength and courageous soul. These are the only few honorable acts he shows throughout this epic.…

    Who Is Beowulf A Hero

It is not enough for a hero to save people but the hero must also have perseverance. Beowulf took the responsibility to protect the people of the Danes when Grendel haunted them for twelve winters. But when Grendel's mother came back for revenge on her son’s life, he had the perseverance to stay and to fight her off too. After he killed both monsters he was crowned king of the Danes. Beowulf knows his responsibility to the people because he said this, "I had a fixed purpose when I put to sea. As I sat in the boat with my band of men, I meant to perform to the uttermost what your people wanted or perish in the attempt, in the fiend's clutches. And I shall fulfil that purpose, prove myself with a proud deed or meet my death here in the mead-hall." ( Lines 632-638) I believe that Beowulf is a responsible hero because he knows that his people are depending on him, so he knows he has a duty to fulfill. Beowulf stayed and finished what he had started when he also had to kill Grendel’s mother when she came seeking vengeance. Not only is Beowulf responsible he also has many other heroic characteristic…
