Examples of Religion in Music
Religion and Music With religion being a social institution that classifies and categorizes specific groups of people, we can see how songs incorporating religious messages or themes can be considered mainstream to a vast majority of the population. As time passes, more and more artists are conforming to this popular trend as they include lyrics that quote different scriptures or symbolism pertaining to whichever God they follow. Breaking Benjamin follow the movement of Heavy Christian rock bands with their deep lyrics favoring Christianity portrayed in their songs “Evil Angel”, “Dance With The Devil”, “Anthem Of The Angels”, and many more which could potentially make Breaking Benjamin considered the flagship artist of the Heavy Christian rock society. Despite being a depressing song about what seems like someone dying; the group describes the awe and might of this “Evil Angel” sent from above to take them to heaven. Hold it together, birds of a feather/ Nothing but lies and crooked wings/ I have the answer, spreading the cancer/ You are the faith inside me/ No, don't/ Leave me to die here/ Help me survive here/ Alone, don't remember, remember/ Put me to sleep evil angel/ Open your wings evil angel/ A-ah/ I'm a believer/ Nothing could be worse/ All these imaginary friends/ Hiding betrayal/ Driving the nail/ Hoping to find a savior/ No,

don't/ Leave me to die here/ Help me survive here/ Alone, don't/ Surrender, surrender/ Put me to sleep evil angel/ Open your wings evil angel/ Oh/ Fly over me evil angel/ Why can't I breathe evil angel/ Put me to sleep evil angel/ Open your wings evil angel/ Oh/ Fly over me evil angel/ Why can't I breathe evil angel (Evil Angel, Phobia). The person described in the lyrics is asking from the Angel to end the suffering in their life and take them away to God. Knowing the power of the angels is a symbol of religion and shows that this group’s music values the divine power. Another way Breaking Benjamin establishes

The speaker says "Each night hordes of these flutterers haunt/And climb by study windowpane;/Fired by the reflection, their insane/Eyes gleam;they know what they want." I believe that the hordes of flutterers might be bad influences on the speaker. He seems as if he doesn't wan to do have any part of it but they are haunting him and he can see their insane eyes gleam which may relate to drug abuse. He ends the stanza with something kind of disturbing because he says that they know what they want from the speaker. That probably means that they want him to give in to the life of misery and…

The song starts off saying “Well the high sheriff told his deputy Won't you go out and bring me Lazarus Bring him dead or alive Lord, Lord Bring him dead or alive Well the deputy, he told the high sheriff I ain't gonna mess with Lazarus Well the deputy, he told the high sheriff Says I ain't gonna mess with Lazarus Well he's a dangerous man Lord, Lord He's a dangerous man Well then the high sheriff, he found Lazarus He was hidin' in the chill of a mountain Well the high sheriff found Lazarus He was hidin' in the chill of the mountain”. The song states that Lazarus is wanted by the high sheriff so he sends the deputy to get him but he refused to foreshadow the idea of being escorted by gods like Athena was escorting Odysseus. Difficult challenges were in his way from being hunted, having to escape and outside the story representing as god’s glory as his death is a test for Jesus and in the song Po Lazarus, been shot and well they take poor Lazarus and they laid him on the commissary gallery like Jesus story of being hanged on the cross relating to the idea of demonstrating humanity as he shows human emotions such as suffering, self-control from the high sheriff in Lazarus…

The buying, selling, and trading of human beings for personal labor, slavery, is often thought to be singlehandedly the most atrocious thing that mankind as a whole has created. The horrors these innocent men, women, and children faced on a day to day basis was parallelled perhaps only by the soldiers fighting the war over their freedom. Though slavery was full of negatives, it also blossomed with positives as a means to cope. African-American slaves used several aspects of their native African culture to cope, two primary components being music and religion.…

“As it rained the evening when you left, and I was sad” you told me that, or perhaps you sang those words while your mind deranged was looking for an inspiration, a light, or just the right words to define your tormented and noisy soul, you looked the perfect way tell me that you would leave me, that you would lose yourself in the way of your follies where others were already sailing aimlessly, and I couldn’t rescue you from that place. You sang until the end of your moons, the end of your emotions, those emotions that we never shared, and we never will. However and after your heartless speech I told you a story, the story of two brother who were lost in the incomprehensibility of one of them and the intolerance of another, I told you the story of Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin, but you stayed singing “This is my punishment, crazy little heart, It kills my soul so little by little I lose sleep, it has never hurt so much, and this suffering is killing me”. (Concha Buika-Culpa Mia Song)…

Secular humanism is the number one belief held by the popular media. Instead of freedom of religion, there are organizations seeking freedom from religion. Prayer is no longer allowed in schools, and if someone is a Christian, they are now considered a minority. Music from the present time is the antithesis of the music that started our nation. Lyrics today are filled with profanity and the “clean” versions of some songs by popular artists could more accurately be named an “instrumental” version. Beyond the actual profanities, the overall message of today’s popular songs has shifted even further away from God. The majority of music is now centered around sex in a way that sex outside of marriage is not only accepted, but it is glorified. Women are objectified in many modern songs and are not described how one should describe a person created in the image of God. Americans have shifted away from God and their culture has followed suit. This shift in ideology has created the demand for songs with content that is being produced today. If the culture did not demand it, the music would not be…

Since the mid 1980’s, collective efforts to define deviant music have focused increasingly on two genres heavy metal and rap music. Most of these claims assert that heavy metal and rap music represent a type of audio pornography that endorses sexist, violent and anti religious behaviors. Musical genres such as jazz and blues and the rock and roll of 1940’s and 1950’s were believed to have contributed to teenager’s moral disintegration. In addition to rock music, performers of newer popular styles, particularly heavy metal and rap, have recently come under attack for their perceived potential to negatively influence young audiences. In a 1985 standing room only United State senate hearing, several prominent political families rallied testimony to the harmful effects of pornography and violence present in the lyrics of heavy metal music. Rap music was lambasted just five years later when a recording by a group called 2 live crew was declared obscene by a federal court in Florida and the members of the band were arrested.…
