The character starts out as a thief, smuggler, and traitor to his friends, but in the end he switches sides and becomes a hero to the rebellion. The second African American actor is Samuel L. Jackson who played Jedi Master Mace Windu. His character starts in the movie Phantom Menace which is the first prequel. This character was leader of the Jedi council and the leader of the Jedi knights in the clone wars. He eventually handed off leadership of the Jedi council to Grand Master Yoda. Ralph Ellisons’ “Battle Royal” is a story about racism and discrimination in the 1940’s. In “Battle Royal” an unnamed narrator fights to gain respect in a society ruled by white people, symbolizing African Americans’ fight for equality. At the beginning of the story the narrators’ grandfather, on his deathbed, tells his son and grandchildren that “our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days” (1272). He then explains that in order to protect their self- respect and pride they must “keep up the good fight” by pleasing the white folks with meek behavior, but maintain their resentment towards the white people (1272). At his graduation the narrator gives a speech about humility and how through humility progress will be made, even though this belief contradicts what his grandfather told him. The narrator then receives an invitation to give his speech at an all-white gathering in the community.…

In the book TKAM the theme is to not let the race/color of someone to cloud the judgement of your decision. This quote shows how people act differently around black people. Aunt Alexandra waited until call was in the kitchen then said “don't talk like that in front of them” (pg.#209)to which atticus replied “talk like what in front of whom”. Aunt Alexandria said atticus shouldn't be talking about racism in front of cal, because that's all the blacks talk about is who is racists and who isn't. When aunt alexandra says this she's judging cal by thinking she gonna go back and talk about it with all her negro friends, she thinks this because cals black. Aunt alexandra does not want anymore talk about atticus, because everyone is calling him a…

For example, African Americans are generally categorized as gangsters, or thieves. That stereotype from Hollywood shows, somebody who may not know many African Americans, will believe people of that ethnicity are identical to those Hollywood stereotypes, believing they are based on reality not fiction. Diversity in the film industry As well as in the 2014 Hollywood Diversity Report, the percentage of ethnic lead roles is only 10.5%, while a Caucasian had a whopping 89.5% of lead roles in film, the range of diversity in ethnicities represented in films. Many of those actors, which are not in lead roles fall into a stereotype called the “Magic Negro”, a character of ethnic background that is the helper of the Caucasian hero, usually connected to nature roots or magic, coming across as the lesser civilized…

Storey (2009) clarifies on page 167 that there is only one human race and within that human race there are different divisions of “races”. In addition, race can be used as a sign or meaning, and also show the importance by taking certain actions. Certain movies and cinema can reflex the significance of race and multiracial and multiethnic dimension, by depicting them either working together or against each other towards a common goal or outcome. Storey states we need to understand that ‘race’ and racism are not natural occurrences; they are a result of human actions and interactions (Storey, 2009, pp. 168).…

Racism has been around since the beginning of time. Basically if you had a skin tone darker than the shade of white, you were inferior. Times have now changed, but there are remnants of this subject everywhere, even in film. The movie Birth of a Nation is considered one of the greatest films of all time, even with these themes. AMC’s Filmsite even has it listed within the 100 Greatest Films of All Time. Another movie with the some of the same themes is Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature as Birth of a Nation, but it does deserve to be higher in the canon. I do believe that Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature because it is a comedy with crude humor and because it has a black sheriff as the protagonist.…

It seems like television writers run out of jokes so they go for an easy joke to fall back on. So that’s why they always create a character to aim at. Rather that be; the dumb brother or the goofy dad, it’s always easy to take a shot at them. However there is an issue when it comes to race in these television sitcoms we see today. For example in the hit television show Modern family. Gloria, Columbian mother who marries a rich white man, is always being picked on because of her accent or for her lack of knowing any of the references. It is like the writers purposely make it so that all immigrant women are hot headed, loud, dumb bimbos. I agree they can be loud however for them to purposely make fun of her is wrong. Another example of this is…
