Ever since the fight for the throne between my two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices , nothing has been right. They fought for the throne, but the outcome came to be that they killed each other and the throne was left to my uncle, King Creon. My uncle is a selfish man who only cares about himself and when he became king of Thebes he got to do whatever he wanted to. My uncle ,King Creon, decided to have a burial for only one of my brothers ,Eteocles and did not want to bury my other brother Polyneices. He gave Eteocles a soldier's funeral because he thought that was what he deserved and believed he has military honor for fighting for his kingdom. My uncle said that no one was allowed to bury Polyneices though and that “his body must lie in the fields” for the “carrion birds to find as they search for food.” My poor brother Polyneices, who fought just as hard, was looked at as a traitor in Creons eyes because “he attacked his hometown kingdom.” Once all this was issued, King Creon created an edict that forbid anyone to bury Polyneices, and if they do they will be stoned to death. He ultimately did this because he thought that he can’t bury a hero and a traitor at the same time, that would just be wrong.…

Antigone is a daughter of the marriage between King Oedipus of Thebes and his mother Jocasta. She is the subject of a popular story in which she attempts to secure a burial for her brother Polynices, even though he is seen as a traitor to Thebes and the law forbids even mourning for him, punishable by death. The burial of Polynices takes place during Oedipus' reign in Thebes, before Oedipus marries Jocasta. Sophocles' tragedies Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone, it occurs in the years after Oedipus' banishment and death, and Antigone has to struggle against Creon. After Oedipus' death, it was decided that the two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices were to reign over Thebes’s taking turns. Eteocles, however, did not want to give away his power causing Polynices to leave Thebes to set up an army. In the fight against Thebes, the two brothers kill each other. After this event, Creon declares that, as punishment, Polynices' body must be left on the plain outside the city to rot and be eaten by animals. Eteocles, on the other hand had been buried as tradition warranted. Antigone determines this to be against the laws of the gods, and is determined to bury her brother regardless of Creon's law. She attempts to persuade her sister Ismene to join her, but fails. Antigone buries her brother by herself; eventually Creon's guards discover this and capture her. Antigone is brought before Creon, where she declares that she knew Creon's law but chose to break it, but she…

When one dies and is then consequently buried by their families it not only completes a spiritual process of passing the soul to the underworld it also fulfills a moral responsibility that the death creates. It is a not just a part of the “Greek Way” to bury the body of a soul who has passed on it is also part of a moral tradition that is felt across all cultures. It is not always a way to allow the soul to pass into the afterlife it is more times than not a way to give the body a peaceful exit and bring the body back to where it had originally come from, the earth. It is a process of putting the body to peace which is owed to all human beings which does not always consist of burial. It can consist of burial rights like the ones that Antigone performed on Polynices the first time that she had visited the body. It can consist of cremation, a funeral, or very low-key ceremony to honor the dead. Giving the body a place to rest and a place to find peace is important across all cultures. By not burying the body of Polynices, Creon disrupted a human ritual, not a ritual just felt by the Greeks, but a ritual of honoring the body that is felt by all people of every walk of life on this planet. Creon, a mortal being, does not have the right to usurp the authority of the…
