Many times a group of people seek a leader they can trust and have confidence in to protect and lead them the right way. In the epic poem Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxons have found just that, a powerful leader, they can trust. Beowulf, the main character and leader, proved his worth and receives lof from his people. Beowulf shows his lof, or fame and pride, by showing his cultural heroism by fighting Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon.…
Warriors had to be willing to sacrifice themselves for glory or for the betterment of the country all without a trace of regret. Beowulf's strength and courage are…
Stop and think for a moment, what is your idea of a hero? What characteristics make up this hero? When reading the story Beowulf it can be discovered that a hero has strength, loyalty, and courage to endure all of their battles. There are qualities that make this epic poem have more Christian aspects, such as when Beowulf gave thanks to God for his safety and rewards in battle, the character Grendel is used symbolically as descendant of Cain, and Beowulf is a Christ like figure.…
The Epic Beowulf emphasizes loyalty; it was one of the most important qualities a man could possess in Beowulf's time, and the presence of extreme loyalty in a person elevated him from ordinary to heroic. Beowulf’s loyalty saved Hrothgar’s country and his people, he transcends above other men because of his extraordinary loyalty to his king. For example, he rushes to help Hrothgar each time he needs him, conquering Grendel, his mother, and the dragon. Beowulf isn’t doing this for the throne or to become famous he simply wants to help Hrothgar and do what is right. There are many occasions that…
Beowulf, the name of the Anglo-Saxon heroic narrative, and also the name of its Scandinavian prince protagonist, cultivates one of the many eight literary theories: Mythological and Archetypal. Beowulf, the protagonist, takes it upon himself to cross the Baltic sea to help assist the land of the Danes from a blood-thirsty brute called Grendel. Initially, Grendel is the only threat is perceived by the Danes, until his mother seeks vengeance for the death of her son. Throughout the epic poem, Grendel and his mother’s background help facilitate many themes, ideals, and archetypes within the narrative. Since they originate from the clan of Cain, Grendel and his mother affect the heroic poem by causing certain individuals…
In the article after reading this comparison by Dr Tom Loughman and Dr John Finley in beowulf and the teaching of leadership , I can tell what point they are trying to create when they compared leadership and beowulf. To let you know what this excerpt is basically the authors annotating and citing evidence as to show their leadership in story of beowulf. They go through each chapter and give a description of what happened and they say their opinions too about it. The authors also shows us how beowulf has the feature of a charismatic hero and potential drawback of charismatic leadership.in my opinion the best comparison they made was conger and kanungo's stating how this created the standard of what charismatic leadership is and the historical background of beowulf and i agree with how leadership does play a very good role in the story of beowulf.…
In the story Beowulf there is many themes that are going on in the story. One that stands out is Heroism, because Beowulf was willing to sacrifice his life to please the king. Beowulf felt the need to help the king because of their past history. The king wanted Grendal dead so that is what Beowulf did. Beowulf has been in so many past fights that he is not afraid to fight one more battle. “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now But I will still fight again seek fame still. If the dragons hiding in the tower to face me” (606-611). Beowulf is getting older and older he is not afraid to fight Grendal and if it is his last he…
Hrothgar was a very generous and respectful leader especially after Beowulf saved his kingdom from Grendel. Hrothgar said, “I adopt you in my heart as a dear son…there’ll be nothing you want for, no worldly goods that won’t be yours…you have made yourself immortal by your glorious action,” (Beowulf.946-954). Hrothgar was a good leader in this situation because he respected the warrior and rewarded him accordingly. Because Hrothgar at this time was such an experienced leader, he knew exactly what to say and give to Beowulf for his deeds. Another example of an ideal warrior displaying leadership skills was Beowulf. During the fight with the dragon, Wiglaf’s shield could not protect him from the heat of the dragon’s flame but, “Wiglaf did well under the wide rim Beowulf shared with him once his own had shattered in sparks and ashes,” (Beowulf.2675-2677). Beowulf became selfless in this moment and ran to the aid of his own warrior to protect him. This was an excellent depiction of leadership because he could have been killed in sharing with his companion but instead he put his soldier in front of himself. Finally, being a leader with qualities of generosity and selflessness can lead to a well-respected and honored…
Watching the movie Beowulf made me amazed by the bravery of its main character. Despite of everything that Beowulf had been through, his courage did not failed him in every battle he had gone. When the time that his men was losing hope on continuing their voyage, he Beowulf remained strong and determined and that made his people gain their courage. His courage brought him to King Hrothgar’s land to save them from the evil monster named “Grendel.” He was so determined to kill the monster and was not even horrified when he saw how strong and evil Grendel was.…
In most stories there is almost always a hero and in the epic poem “Beowulf”, it’s Beowulf, he’s so heroic the whole story is named after him! The long, narrative poem was written by an unknown author during the Anglo-Saxon period ranging from 449 to 1066. The story describes the deed of the hero Beowulf who possesses supernatural qualities which he eventually uses to defeat his nemesis, Grendel. In order to qualify as a hero, there are certain characteristics a character must obtain, these include bravery, strength and the ability to handle a dispute personally. Analysing the poem “Beowulf” we know that Beowulf’s nemesis, Grendel is a demonic creature who hates the sounds of celebrating and singing that come from the mead hall (Heorot) in Denmark.…
This starts with fifthteen Geatish warriors and Beowulf as the leader, was Beowulf always alone? How can Beowulf inflict in the leaders we have to this day on? According to the article, Beowulf and the Teaching of Leadership,by Dr. Tom Loughman and Dr. John Finley, Beowulf is seen as a charismatic leader model. Loughman and Finley help us readers understand the real situation about leadership in the epic poem, beowulf, and in our lives. Also,it models how the main character exemplifies leadership. There is enough information to discuss how Beowulf is a charismatic leader. Beowulf is really brave and is a really strong man also fearless who others follow and fear him because of his strength.…
Every great leader starts with three great character traits. To be a good leader, you cannot major in minor things; you must be less distracted than your competition. Leaders need inspiration, they are not self-made; they are driven. A leader should be patient, open-minded, and present a positive attitude.…
Many of the leadership skills shown in Beowulf are still used today, but they are not taken as seriously. The two major skills that are not taken to heart as much are keeping your promises and swallowing your pride. Two of the skills that are still taken into effect are focusing on making your country more successful and your willingness to stand for what is right. In today’s world politicians are the closest beings a country has to a king.…
In continuation of his leadership Beowulf now takes on the role of being a kindhearted king towards his people. Rather than sending his warriors out to fight the dragon Beowulf sacrificed himself. Beowulf “worked for the people, but as well as that he behaved like a hero” (3005-3006). One quality of a king that makes them a great king is the fact that they never take full credit for the many battles one.…
Beowulf, after defeating Grendel, has gained a reputation and has proved his strength, “But Beowulf longed only for fame”(lines 502-503). He wished to be at the top of the food chain and strive for greatness, which is why he went after Grendel’s mother. This relates to most humans in the quest for success.
