It was custom that a lowly servant would wash the guest feet before they sat down for a meal. When Jesus and the disciples arrived in the upper room for a feast He immediately shocked his followers. Jesus took a towel, wrapped it around his waist, and began to wash the feet of His disciples. When Jesus reached Simon Peter, he asked a good question, “Lord, are you washing my feet?” “Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” (John 13:6-7) Jesus goes on to say if He doesn’t wash the feet of His friends, they have no part in Him. He is telling the disciples that they must strive to be like Him. Jesus humbled himself; God himself was humble enough to wash the feet of the disciples. The greatest lesson comes from this story; “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:14-15) Jesus is saying believers you are to serve, as I have served. No one is greater than the next, we must love and serve each other in the name of God.…

But Jesus does not avoid contact with common unclean people, instead, he touch lepers, spend time with Gentiles, go to graves or corpses, heals on the sabbath (i.e. purity in the sense of profane and sanctified). Jesus defines a new halakha for his disciples. The clean and sanctified does not become contaminated by but brings cleansing into an unclean environment. He moves the focus of purity from the outer man to the inner, he violates the purity codes to bring Gods mercy to those who needs cleanliness. (deSilva, 2004,…

Jesus is challenging the Pharisees to look past their trust in laws and rules to try and see that everyone has worth. Jesus can see the worth of everyone, but the Pharisees can only see worth in people who are considered pure. Jesus uses a verse from Hosea 6:6 saying “go and learn what this means” he is trying to tell them that rituals should not replace the act of love or mercy.12…

This is symbolic of Christ and the perceptions of perfection, someone who is perfect can not last in an imperfect world. This is similar to John, where his perceptions of the Brave New World are distressing where he see’s social norms as restrictive and ‘unholy’ denying the experience of the human condition. This is shown when John exclaims…

Some may argue that the greatest love story to date is Romeo and Juliet: the love; the passion; the unlikely pair. Although Romeo and Juliet may be a great tale of two unlikely lovers, it could never compare to Our Christian Story. However, throughout these two renowned stories, elements of love and sacrifice can be demonstrated frequently. Out of love, we are able to make sacrifices for those whom which we hold dear to our hearts; when humanity betrayed God by consuming fruit from the forbidden tree, He displayed an unconditional love by sending His only son, Jesus Christ, to absolve us from sin. This represents a vital bond of love that has, over time, remained between God and humanity, but to experience this bliss we must freely embrace…

Loving your enemies does not seem easy, praying for them even harder, and doing both for those who persecute you, practically impossible. Conversely, during the Sermon on the Mount, recorded in Matthew 5:43-48, Christ calls his followers to love their enemies, a calling that perhaps seemed just as contrary to first century culture as today’s culture. However, as seen through Christ’s ministry on earth, he did not call his followers to what seemed easy, but to radically transform their lives to adhere to a higher standard of righteousness. This paper will, through investigating the historical, literary, and theological background of the passage, address Christ’s calling to a higher standard of righteousness, in pursuit of perfection through…

God is love and his love takes everyday caregiving and transforms it into healing encounters. When love is absent, quality healing programs will be scarce, and non-conducive (Chapman, 2012). Many scriptures in the bible teaches about loving one another and loving God. When Jesus was in the world, he taught about healing and physically healed the sick. In the bible James 5:14-15, New International Version, Jesus questions if there was anyone sick. The Lord asks them to call the elders of the church, to pray over them, anointing them with oil and getting healed. Jesus continues to say that the Lord will raise them up, referring to if they have fallen in sin they will be forgiven, and this forgiveness part serves the spiritual need of the sick (Holy Bible, New International Version, 2011). In the Old Testament, Genesis 2:7 explains that man was created in the image of God the creator (Samples, 2011). God gave human the breath of life in the form of spirit. This symbolizes that man has a physical body…

The Lord’s Passover begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Feast of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. For seven days present an offering made to the Lord by fire. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work (Leviticus 23:5–8). It is a celebration of freedom for the Jews from Egypt. It was freedom from years of being oppressed and the brutal, enslavement and treatment by Pharaoh of Egypt. Passover celebrates the emancipation of Jews and the birth of their own nation. One important piece of history that has been told to many generations is how Moses helped his people escape from Egypt.
