In the epic The Odyssey, the epic hero Odysseus exhibits man heroic traits, the most important of which is intellect. In The Odyssey, the hero Odysseus first shows intellect in the island of the Lotus Eaters. He chooses to go onto the island and grab his men that got addicted to the lotus. They have lost all hope in returning home. Odysseus doesn’t want them to lose loyalty to their families. This is the first episode that he shows the heroic trait of intellect. The second adventure that Odysseus shoes intellect is the land of the cyclops. Then they go and explore. They get trapped in a cave with a ruthless cyclops.     One of the traits that Odysseus demonstrates is courage. This is displayed in many situations such as when Odysseus demands hospitality from the Cyclops: “It was our luck to come here; here we stand beholden for your help, or any gifts you give- as custom is to honor strangers. We would entreat you, great Sir, have a care for the gods’ courtesy; Zeus will avenge the unoffending guest.”(Page 1052) This is courageous because the Cyclops is a giant that towers over them and demanding anything from a beast of that size takes much courage and bravery.     First, nearing the end of the Epic, Odysseus continues to use his intelligence to overcome obstacles and hardships. Upon one attempt to return home, Odysseus must pass the island of the Sirens. At a contest to see if anyone can string Odysseus’s bow, the hero plans his attack after stringing the bow and firing on the suitors.
