A hero is someone or something who helps others with an honorable purpose, or a person who possesses traits that others could see as the traits of a role model. In my mind, Frodo Baggins holds these heroic characteristics and, in the end, made choices to assist the well-being of his companions. Frodo’s efforts display that he is concerned for the future of all living things and does not act simply based on his own wants. For instance, when Gandalf questions Frodo of the Ring’s prospect, Frodo chooses to eliminate it. Though he would be destroyed, as well as others, it proves later that he did not do it to benefit only himself. Furthermore, in a meeting discussing the Ring’s future, Frodo volunteers to bring it to the evil land of Mordor. Any…

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Everyone wants to be that one person who saves the day, but most do not have the guts to do anything heroic. Some individuals might get pushed into an adventure, and maybe that ordinary individual might find out who they were really meant to be. Just like a little ordinary hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who did extraordinary things, became a true hero. In “The Hobbit”, Bilbo Baggins goes from a hobbit to a hero by saving his friends from giant spiders, from castle dungeons, and from a terrifying dragon.…

A hero can be the most disgusting or the most beautiful, but heroes are supposed for their image and reputation. Human and even dwarves think of almost the same hero one who fights for the innocent and helps when no other can but the difference is humans want a perfect being who is to all peoples certain likes and give to their selfish need and dwarves want a broad hero that brings riches and bounty for them and they deem a certain type of person to be a hero in their eyes. Bilbo Baggins, from the Hobbit, is not what either expect ,but in his heart of hearts he is a hero to many though some who may not recognize it but inside they know that in this little hobbits lifetime he is a hero in the makes.…

    Bilbo As A Hero Essay

Often epic tales feature a story with a miraculous hero who dies in battle or when treasure is attained, but in Bilbo’s case I wouldn’t say he became a hero. Although he was faced with many dangers and is forced to go outside of his comfort zone and build up the confidence to save him comrades, he still returns to Rivendell an untried hero as he was when he left for his adventure. In contradiction, at the beginning of the book, Bilbo lives in his own little world in the Shire with his small hobbit home. But by the end of the book, he has gained an understanding of the world around him, and a sense of adventure, along with courage, bravery, and loyalty. Although he didn’t end the story as a hero, he gained several personal values along the way.…

On the website Dictionary.com, a hero is defined as a man or woman of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his or her brave deeds and noble qualities. Its second definition is a person who, in opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit”. Bilbo Baggins was a small hobbit who lived in a hole and had absolutely no heroic characteristics whatsoever. His character was meant to appeal to children yet somehow his character appeals to adults as an epic hero. In some ways Bilbo could be considered an epic hero. He accepted the adventure however, in most traditional stories with an epic hero, the hero is super strong and well known, and their actions are somewhat severe. Bilbo isn’t even the one that kills the dragon, in this story it is someone else.…

To further investigate Bilbo Baggins as a hero, first the term hero must be defined. In literary works, heroes have classical been defined by their noble birth or high status in society. Most commonly, these characters are male, exhibit mythic strength and prowess on the battlefield, and have already been established by their own people or country as a heroic figure (Nagy 33). Yet this type of reputation is not the case with the race of hobbits. A hobbit is not a warrior nor does a hobbit appear to possess the makings of a hero. As Tolkien said in a 1964 interview, “[Hobbits] are just rustic English people, made small in size because it reflects the small reach of their imagination.” (Carpenter 180). To a degree, this statement is to be true,…

    The Hobbit

An admirable character in the The Hobbit is Bilbo Baggins. At the start of the story he would much rather relax in his comfy hobbit-hole or take long walks in the Shire than go on adventures, as Mr Baggins thinks “adventures make one late for dinner.” Bilbo reluctantly accepted the offer, and soon finds himself on a long journey through the forests of Mirkwood, to get to Smaug’s dark lair hidden away in the Lonely Mountain. Thorin Oakensheild who is the leader of the group wasn’t that keen about having Bilbo on the quest but soon realises the goodness in him “There is more in you of good than you know child of the kindly West.” Bilbo is quite unlike the dwarves as he cherished friendship and happiness over gold and wealth and he shows this by putting his life at risk several time by escaping ferocious goblins and killing giant spiders to save Thorin and the other dwarves. Throughout the story Bilbo’s maturity develops and he begins to gain a better sense of identity and confidence outside of the comfort of his hobbit hole. Tolkien has done this by contrasting Bilbo’s personal growth with the clear lack of development shown in the dwarves. I think Bilbo is an admirable and remarkable companion as he shows wisdom, courage, bravery and above all nobility. Bilbo taught me a valuable lesson because of his goal to survive and be happy while the dwarves desire for…

Everyone in the world has a different opinion about what a hero is. They come in many shapes, sizes, have different characteristics, values, and beliefs. For me, a hero is someone who is willing to put a hundred percent effort into protecting you from pain. A hero doesn’t have to have impeccable character, high importance in society, or have a classic sandwich named after them in the local pub. A hero just needs to be someone who cares for your happiness and loves you for being yourself. My mother is my hero.…
