Examples Of Heroism In The Crucible

What do you think a hero is? Someone who has superpowers and saves lives? A hero is someone who does intelligent actions, sacrificing their own personal concern for a greater good. In the play “The Crucible” written by Arthur Miller there was a big trial on witchcraft that tore the town Salem apart. There were multiple heroic characters that illustrate wise actions to try to end the witch trails or to simply survive them. There were three characters in The Crucible that displayed heroism by doing intelligent acts. To begin with, John Proctor was smart enough to confess his affair to show that Abigail was lying about being controlled by witches. John Proctor says, “I have known her, sir. I have known her” (Miller 110). Proctor confessing showed the court that his accusation isn’t a lie, he knows what she is capable of doing crazy things like accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft so she can be with John. When Proctor told the court about his affair with Abigail, it made Abigail look less trustworthy and suspicious. Moreover, Giles Corey was another hero, he refused to confess to witchcraft. Elizabeth explains, “He would not answer aye or nay… they pressed him” (Miller 135). Giles was pressed to death, he died a hero because he was smart enough to not confess or say no because then the court couldn’t actually charge him of witchcraft. Therefore the court can’t take his land and sell it to someone, his family would inherit the land and would
John Proctor, Giles Corey, and John Hale were the three most intelligent characters, they all cleverly played their pieces. The Crucible really taught the readers to not be so naive about the things going around in society, and to not be afraid of standing up against any troubles that come your way.
