He can be characterized by three principal traits; his valor and fervor to defend others, his loyalty to his people and oaths that he pledges, and his humility and humbleness through everything. We first learn of Beowulf’s prompt call to action when he hears of the trouble among the Danes. There is no hesitation or soul searching on Beowulf’s behalf, about whether Grendel’s attacks on Herot need to be thought over,

In “Grendel” and “Beowulf” a monster named Grendel is doomed by his environment; unable to communicate with humans and built like a beast Grendel appears as a monster to men. Stop and think for a moment, what is your idea of a hero? What characteristics make up this hero? When reading the story Beowulf it can be discovered that a hero has strength, loyalty, and courage to endure all of their battles. There are qualities that make this epic poem have more Christian aspects, such as when Beowulf gave thanks to God for his safety and rewards in battle, the character Grendel is used symbolically as descendant of Cain, and Beowulf is a Christ like figure.…

What makes a mythical hero? In the article of Joseph Campbell’s “ The hero with a thousand faces” heros go through trials and tribulation which make them into the hero they are meant to be. The author of Beowulf is unknown. Beowulf is a hero, but doesn’t follow Campbell’s theory. Beowulf was a noble man when he fought Grendel he used his bare hands so it would be a fair fight and he would fight for fame. He wanted all people to like him. Campbell always has a love intrest and beowulf doesn’t. Campbell’s fights for women not fame. Both are heros but in different ways. A hero always goes through obsticals which puts them in the path of their adventure. For example when the sun goddess hides from fear she went through obsticals but she still was…

    Hero and Beowulf

The first sign of heroism in Beowulf occurs during the fight against Grendel. Grendel is a monster that “had dwelt for a time / in misery among the banished monsters” (Beowulf, 104-105). This monster is claimed to be banished due to his descent form Cain. Grendel’s havoc originated with his inability to occupy the Heorot without being treated with hostility and hatred due to his God-cursed nature. As a result, Grendel acts out of anger and jealousy in his “lonely war” (164). Grendel is jealous of that fact that he is a member of “Cain’s clan, whom the Creator had outlawed / and condemned as outcasts” (106-107). He will never be able to inhabit the land the Danes. Since Beowulf is able to conquer Grendel, the first heroic trait is the dismissal of envy. This is seen a second time by Beowulf as he refuses to takeover the Geat nation upon Hygelac’s death. After Queen Hygd offered Beowulf the throne, he refused and “he did provide support for the prince / honored and minded him until he matured /…

A hero is someone who cares about other people's lives than their own. Many people can call themselves a hero but don’t act like a hero. For example, in the book The Odyssey by Homer, the main character Odysseus is sailing with his men after the Trojan War, and he sees himself as a hero. On his way home from the battle a terrible storm had hit that was made by Zeus, the god of all gods, and his way home was turned into an adventure. Odysseus’ actions on the adventure makes his a very disrespectful guy, that caused his own imprisonment because he invaded Polyphemus’ cave and stayed, when he didn’t tell his men about Scylla and Charybdis when they were approaching them, and the fact that he let his men eat the sun god’s, Helios’, cattle.…

What is a hero? Many people have different definitions of what a hero can be for example Beowulf. In the story Beowulf, Beowulf the hero is described as a great fighter and a man of tremendous strength. In my opinion a hero is not what the story describes a hero as. my definition of a hero is a good person who does something nice or saves somebody. A hero can also be someone you look up too. The Hollywood's definition of a hero is way different than my definition of a hero their definition of a hero is somebody who saves lives, has supernatural powers and are always protagonist in the stories. Some traits a hero has to make him a hero are they are nice, brave, have powers, caring and are patient. My definition and Hollywood's definition of…
