The overarching theme in "Godfather Death" by Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm reminds us that greed will always be one's demise and it is impossible to cheat death. The story begins with a father looking for a suitable godfather for his thirteenth child. He encounters both God and the devil but passes on both of them. Consequently he chooses the devil as the suitable godfather, since he says death treats all men equally. Godfather death gives the young man a gift at his baptism; an herb, which he allows him to use to heal patients, but only when death deems that it is not there time. This is especially obvious in the Pardoner's Tale, where the Pardoner, a church-appointed official who collects gold for absolving people their sins, tells about the evils of money.
