In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the main character Jay Gatsby is the tragic hero in the novel. Gatsby is a rich man who falls in love with a woman from his past, but could not be with her; instead, he ended up alone and was killed.
Gatsby was a poor young man who fell in love with a wealthy lady, Daisy Buchanan. Daisy was in love with Gatsby as well, but because of war, he had to leave her so they were not able to see each other again for years. She ended up marrying Tom Buchanan because he was from a wealthy family and she would have a better reputation rather than marrying a poor man. After the war, Gatsby started “bootlegging” or illegally selling alcohol and eventually became rich.
Gatsby used his wealth to throw parties so he could try to get Daisy’s attention and impress her. He did end up impressing her. However, because Daisy was married to her husband Tom she could not be with Gatsby. Tom found out about Daisy’s affair and confronted Gatsby. Gatsby insisted that Daisy never loved Tom but Daisy could not deny her love for her husband. It showed that Gatsby was extremely naive to believe that Daisy would love him to a certain extent as to say that she never loved her own husband. She ran over Myrtle Wilson, Tom’s mistress, with Gatsby’s car. Daisy was driving very fast and Myrtle ran in front of the car thinking Tom was driving, but Daisy did not stop the car and killed Myrtle. Gatsby was not concerned about Myrtle but wanted to cover up the crime to keep Daisy close. Because Gatsby was so trusting of Daisy, he thought she would go home and come back to him. Instead, she runs off with Tom and leaves Gatsby. Gatsby was murdered by Myrtle’s husband, George Wilson, because Tom accused Gatsby for killing
