Examples Of Altering State Of Consciousness
Altered State of Consciousness, also known as ASC, is a temporary change in one's normal mental state without being considered unconscious. There are many different types of ASC but some examples would be dissociation, hypnosis and meditation. All these forms of ASC can all be achieved in different ways, and are achieved for different reasons. For example, meditation is usually used to help reduce stress, and lower anxiety. While hypnosis is used to open people to the power of suggestion. Altered State of Consciousness affects the brain and a person by having one lose the sense of identity with one's body or with one's normal sense perceptions. ASC comes in different forms, and affect one in different ways.

Meditation is the practice of training the mind in order to induce relaxation. Meditation is used to help a person reach relaxation, build internal energy or develop a new level of patience. People that use meditation can enhance their awareness and gain more control of their physical and mental state. Meditation affects the brain by, increasing both the alpha and theta brain waves and physical indicators such as slowed pulse and breathing. One may want to achieve this state of consciousness if they have a large amount of stress or anxiety or a high blood pressure. Another reason why one might want to achieve this state of consciousness may be to gain the ability to deal with everyday problems throughout life. It can also help with mental illnesses like depression and in extreme cases PTSD(post-traumatic stress disorder). Meditation, just like hypnosis, only has positive effects. It helps a person’s body both mentally and physically there are no negative effects from meditation. Because one who meditates has lower blood pressure, and a lot less stress and anxiety their lifespan will increase. It lowers the brain’s activity and causes it to slow down, causing the brain to not overload due to too many activities going on at the …show more content…
Psychoactive drugs differ from medicinal drugs because it has psychological effects, meaning that it can change one’s experience, perception, mood, thinking and overall behavior. There four different types of psychoactive drugs, Stimulants, Sedatives, Narcotics, and Hallucinogens. Each type affects a different part of the body or brain. There are different reasons why people use drugs, one reason is that the abuse makes one feel good and forget the problem at hand. Another reason could be peer pressure, just for fun, or filling an empty void one might have. Despite the reason, each type of drug affects the brain the same. Drugs affect the brain by tapping into its communication system and interfering with the way neurons normally send, receive and process information, causing the brain to send, receive, and process information at a slow pace. Each type of drugs have their own effects, for example stimulants like cocaine, nicotine, and meth cause anxiety, restlessness paranoia etc while sedatives like alcohol, xanax, and valium cause impaired coordination, mood swings and depression. Narcotics such as morphine heroin and codeine cause lethargy, nausea and drowsiness while hallucinogens like LSD, mescaline, and psilocybin cause Nausea, paranoia, anxiety, and impaired judgement.
