Three young girls, wearing bathing suits come to the grocery store with barefoot. Sammy is impressed with their appearance and personality. He is always interested to watch most beautiful girls. By staring those girls, Sammy has made mistake when ring the items of the customers. The leading girl, named ‘Queenie’, says in a different way that which he had created in his mind. To Sammy the girls represented something bigger than just rebelling against the rules it was that they represented excitement inside of his boring town. The excitement that made his boring life more interesting, an exciting life that would pull him from his irony fate of growing old and having a life-long career at “A&P” and in order to join the lifestyle he would have to be initiated into it. First, before he began his rites of passage he identified the leaders of the group which he nicknamed “Queenie” luckily it was the one he wanted to impress because he desired her as soon as she walked in the store so determining to take the rite of passage when presented to him would be a “no brainer”. It is clear that he views the girls in a sexual way by the way he describes Queenie from her “white prima donna legs” (1), to the way the straps of her bathing suit “were off her shoulders looped loosely around the cool tops of her arms” (1) causing her suit to slide down a little, how when she “turned so slow it made [his] stomach rub the inside of [his] apron” (2), how cute it was when she lifted “a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top” (3) and her friend whom he “liked better from the back” because she had “a really sweet can” (3). Sammy was so infatuated with them, noticing every detail about each of the girls, that he wanted them to notice him too. When the manager of the supermarket embarrasses them for wearing bathing suits, Sammy uses this opportunity to get their attention and ultimately impress them. This story is narrated by Sammy, a young cashier at the supermarket A & P. The grocery store is in a small Massachusetts town. It was a Thursday afternoon Sammy, the 19 year old narrator of "A&P," notice three girls in bathing suits entering his store, which is otherwise mostly populated with middle aged housewives. Things were going OK until Lengel the manager showed up. The girls are in Sammy's checkout lane preparing to pay and be on their way. But Lengel feels the need to tell them they are not dressed right for the A&P. Sammy doesn't like the way Lengel treats the girls, so, after ringing them up, he quits his job.     Sammy demonstrates through his words that he is an excellent observer. When Sammy observes and says, “There was this chunky one, with the two piece – it was bright green and the seams on the bra well still sharp and her belly was still pretty pale so I guessed she just got it” (753) it is clear that he works hard to perceive every single details of the girls. Sammy spends time describing the others two girls detailed, and every single movement they make around the store. Then he describes the people’s reactions cause by the girls’ commotion.
