Example Of Fallacious Arguments
Fallacies are defects that have the power to weaken an argument. Fallacious arguments are much more common than we may think, and they tend be persuasive to the casual listener or reader. Politicians, celebrities, and advertisement commercials constantly make use of them. As an example of a fallacy, I’m going to use the Hollywood celebrity Alec Baldwin in the commercial for Hulu. Alec Baldwin is known for his success in the movie industry. His career began on television in an NBC soap opera called “The Doctors” throughout the years 1980-1982 (“Alec Baldwin” 1). He is currently one of the most well known actors in Hollywood. During the last Super Bowl, he stared in a commercial for Hulu; a website that offers streaming for free movies, TV

A fallacy is a mistaken belief which is usually based on an unsound argument. One example of a fallacy is called an unsupported assertion. An unsupported assertion is an assertion which is not supported, but nevertheless constitutes a major part of an argument. In his argument against Romney, Gingrich, either unknowingly or purposefully, uses an unsupported assertion to paint Romney in an extremely negative light. Gingrich says, “I'm sure last night, at an elegant three-star restaurant in New York, that Mitt was fully at home, happy to share his vision of populism, which involved a little foie gras, a certain amount of superb cooking, but was…

Arguments based on emotion work in different media by getting the audience to feel a sense of what the advertiser is trying to convey. The effectiveness of these arguments differ based on the promoter and what they are trying to present. For example, if the promoter is trying to get a message across through a book, they have to include something that might interest readers. Unlike books, if they are trying to advertise something through television, they include something that might interest people who like watching T.V., such as “couch potatoes” etc. The approach for magazines is different. If someone is already reading a magazine they are in for ads therefore it is much easier to grab their attention. However, arguments based on emotion vary significantly on websites. You can go from a positive response to an extremely negative response in a few seconds, therefore you must be careful. Certain things an ad might portray may go against what someone believes and will instigate “hate” comments which technically may not deserve that type of classification. Others may be able to receive the emotion the ad is trying to present and therefore the ad can be successful. Newspapers are an emotionally colder source than television news in my perspective because when you are watching the news, the reporters can sound a little enthusiastic, delivering the news in a hopeful manner. When reading the newspaper, you can only interpret it how you envision it and so if the tone of the paper is depressing, then it would be emotionally colder.…

After reading this short tale of two men in college, and one not-so-bright college girl, I have learned many things about fallacies. In our powerpoint presentation, it says that each generation is to learn these fallacies. This tale of the college students and the teaching of fallacies was in a much different generation than we are in now. Some fallacies I learned of in this story that were different from the ones stated in my course text were, Dicto Simpliciter, Contradictory Premises, Ad Misericoriam, Hypothesis Contrary to Fact, and Poisoning the Well.…

Fallacies are fun. Errors in deceptive, logic, accidental or deliberate, fallacies go together with studies in critical thinking and reading, and give us great feelings of fallibility. Human consciousness cannot express all the knowledge of experience through language. “Love is a Fallacy” is a short fun story written in old school days, concerning raccoon coats and the vicissitudes and traps of courtship. Just to show how the story is dated; you will rarely see in fact there is no one who wears raccoon coats today. Fallacy has found it’s mostly from Latin into English version of stories. But reading “Love is a fallacy” introduces one to the fun world of fallacy.…
