Examining the effects of popular children’s Media on young girls’ body image

A study was done to explore the effects of short exposure to appearance-related media on young girls’ body image. Some writings/studies has suggested that girls at the age of 6 and older are experiencing problems with their body, or body dissatisfaction (Dohnt & Tiggemann, 2005). Some researchers are even saying that girls as young as 5 are having problems with their body image. There is some evidence that suggests that young children are aware of being thin or the “thin ideal” that exists in today’s society. Researchers are focusing on the information underneath that may contribute to why young people are thinking things about an ideal body type. In this study, (Hayes & Tantleff-Dunn, 2010) chose to examine the effects of exposure to popular animated children’s media on young girls’ body image and appearance-related behaviors.
For this experiment, it was hypothesized that exposure to appearance-related media (watching Disney movies: Beauty and the Beast) would result in more appearance-related play behavior (e.g. Playing dress up more) than demonstrated by girls in the control group (watching Lilo and Stitch and Dora the Explorer). A second hypothesis was said that girls exposed to an appearance-related media would show greater body dissatisfaction with their ideal and current body size using figural stimuli.
Young kids were recruited from pre-schools and elementary schools. Informed consent was obtained from parents and as compensation for participation the parents would receive the opportunity to obtain an assessment of their child’s general intellectual abilities. There were 121 mothers/daughters participating from a metropolitan area in the Southeast United States. From 11 mothers, data was unavailable so those girls did not participate.     In the Psychological report that I read, the authors really accentuated the point that media has made unattainable expectations for girls, adolescent girls, and young women and their bodies. Starting at the age of seven, young girls of all race and body have been thrown into the idea that their bodies aren’t as great as those in media. The media has forced many people to feel body dissatisfaction, causing physical and mental health problems. In this modern day and age, thin women are dominating media, such as movies, magazines and television. Being thin is consistently a more emphasized and rewarded aspect. While being thin is over-represented, overweight characters are underrepresented, and much more frowned upon in media. Most people don’t recognize that modern women in media are thinner than the population, as well as thinner throughout the decades, and because of this, the criteria for anorexia has become thinner as well. Fashion models, cartoons, movie and television actresses, Playboy Bunnies, and Miss America Pageants have all instilled the thought in women that media portrayals are reality. Because of media portrayal, body dissatisfaction has been the core aspect behind consistent eating disorders in women, such as bulimia, as well as low-self esteem, depression and obesity. Modern day media is showcasing bodies that are otherwise out of reach. These bodies are skewed and ingrained in women’s brains to adopt them into reality. Decreased satisfaction in bodies result in some negative eating behaviors such as dieting, bingeing and purging, as well as skipping meals.     The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between eating disorders and gender. Surveys were issued to both males and females aged from 17 to 18 to investigate body satisfaction, opinions on the factors that influence eating disorders, and opinion on the growing importance of eating disorders in our society.
