Evolution of Tigers
Evolution of Tigers

The tiger (Panthera tigris), a member of the Felidae family, is the largest of the four "big cats" in the genus Panthera include: The tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard. Native to much of eastern and southern Asia, the tiger is an apex predator and an obligate carnivore.

1, The origin and evolution of the tiger. Carnivorous mammals evolved from Miacids small pine marten-like insectivores that lived 60 million - 55 million years ago. The miacids split into two lines: Miacidae and Viverravidae. Miacidae gave rise to Arctoidea/Canoidea group (bears and dogs) while Viverravidae gave rise to Aeluroidea/Feloidea group (cats, hyenas, civets, mongooses) around 48 million years ago. The Viverravidae also gave rise to a group called Nimravidae. The Nimravids were cat-like creatures that evolved in parallel with true cats; they are not part of true cat lineage and have left no living descendents. The first true cat to arise from Viverravidae was Proailurus (first cat) around 30 million years ago. The best-known species was P lemanensis, found in France.
Proailurus was a small weasel-like cat with relatively short legs and a long body. It had one more premolar on each side of its bottom jaw than do modern cats. About 20 million years ago, Proailurus gave rise to Pseudaelurus. Pseudaelurus were Miocene ancestors of cats. Pseudaelurus lorteti was about the size of a large lynx while P validus was the size of a large lynx or small puma. Three other species of early cat are described as Pratifelis, Vishnufelis and Sivaelurus (S chinjienis).Pseudaelurus went on to split into two major groups: the Machairodontinae (true sabre-tooths) and Schizailurus (the ancestor of the modern day Felidae group). 18 million years ago, Schizailurus gave rise to the Felidae. The first of the modern Felids were the early cheetahs; now represented by Acinonyx (modern cheetah); true cheetahs are believed to have evolved around 7 million years

Due to scarce fossil records, the official origin of this species is currently unknown. However the first appearance of viverridae in Europe occurs in the early Oligocene & the Miocene Periods in Africa. Studies also suggest that their skeletal morphology & tooth structure have remained the same for an estimated 40-50 million years. Civets, Genets, and Linsangs have long, sinewy bodies, elongated heads with pointed snouts and especially strong claws. Most have shorter fur with a more slender appearance and a tail that can exceed body length. Although the civet species is very diverse, their adaptations are based upon the niche they occupy. The African civet has digitigrade feet, non/semi-retractable claws,…

Cheetahs are a separate genus from other great cats, a genus of their own. Their genus name, Acinonyx, is a Greek word for “thorn” and “claw”. Differ from lions and leopards, whose retractable claws are designed for tearing flesh and climbing trees, cheetahs have semi-retractable claws providing solid grip and quick acceleration. The cheetah’s body is designed for speed – pure, raw, explosive speed. It’s small streamlined head; deep chest; long, light limbs; powerful hind legs; flexible shoulders and spine; long muscular tail for balance; semi-retractable claws combined to make cheetahs the fastest predator sprinter on the planet. A matured cheetah can cover more than 25 feet in one stride and reach a top speed of 60mph or more. More than half…

Two animals that I chose are Panthera leo spelaea known as European or Eurasian cave lion and cave bear. European cave lion lived from about 370,000 to 10,000 years ago. From the paintings and the fossils that have been found we can say that cave lion is much bigger that the normal lions that we know today. Rounded, protruding ears, tufted tail, and perhaps faint, tiger-like stripes are the common thing between all of the lion caves. Mountain lion was living in Europe until the last European Ice Age. Cave lion lived in the same time pried that man was living in the cave because there is a panting of them all over the caves. The paintings in Paleolithic Europe shows some species that only people who saw them and lived around them can paint them…

Diprotodontid fossils dates back 25 million years ago to the late Oligocene period. These animals were about the size of a sheep and were mostly likely descened from the wynyardiids. The subfamily Diprotodontinae, including Diprotodon optatum, are a Pliocene-Pleistocene group. Diprotodon may have evolved from the Pliocene diprotodontine Euryzygoma during the late Pliocene. It has been discovered by Price in 2008 that there is only one specie of Diprotodon, the Diprotodon optatum. As the climate changed in the Pleistocene Period, it is believed that a group of the Diprotodons, through many generations, evolved into a smaller body size to adapt to the harsher climate and a scarcer food source, these were the ancestors of the modern wombat and koalas.…

The Egyptians were possibly the first to domesticate cats. But the question is how did they do it? According to J. Hill, “Egyptians learned that the wild cats preyed on scavengers and began to leave out food (such as fish heads) to tempt the cats to visit them regularly”. According to the text “The cats came for the food and to avoid larger predators.” ( J. Hill) This evidence supports one of the reasons why wild cats came to the Egyptian people. The predators of the cats were mainly birds of prey such as the red-footed falcon. In time, the cats evolved into the cat we know today. Now the cat is the most common housepet in the whole world!…

Giraffids first arose 8 million years ago (mya) in south-central Europe during the Miocene epoch. The superfamily Giraffoidea, together with the family Antilocapridae (whose only extant species is the pronghorn), evolved from the extinct family Palaeomerycidae.[9] The earliest known giraffid was the deer-like Climacoceras.…
