Light has started from the sunlight and moonlight, and then the fire has changed the concept of light. Humans made torches from wooden sticks, lamps from rocks, bones and pottery, candles from bee wax, oil lamps and gas lamps but fire was common thing in all these eras which actually produced light. Discovery of electricity made the light enter into new era of technology. Thomas Edison invented the incandescent bulb and then the technology of bulb evolves continuously due to socio cultural and technological trends. Now sophisticated LED bulbs are in the markets which are efficient, cheap, long lasting and reliable. Invention of bulb had great impact on the society because it increased working hours, workplace safety, home safety, leisure hours and leisure activities. In this research paper we have examined the evolution of light from the starting of life on earth, and then the journey of light from natural light sources to sophisticated artificial sources of light and light systems.

Studying the basic concepts of Technology Management as a part of the course of the International Master’s degree program at TUT motivated us to select this case study topic as an assignment task. This paper discusses the concepts of “Evolution of light technology”, its phases and the latest trends and technologies that are related to it.

We would like to thank Dr. Dedehayir Ozgur for the knowledge sharing and guidance throughout the process of our work. Tampere, May 2013 Muhammad Iqbal Adnan Saleem Muhammad Usama Mazhar Kashif Ihsan Khattak Muhammad Imran Anwar

Evolution of light has seen many eras of technology but it started from sun and moon. Sunlight and moon light were the only sources of light to start the life on earth. Man used to live in open spaces and there was always the danger of life from other species. Taking fire as gift from heavens man started making fire torches for its safety and illumination of caves. Then he made the lamps out of different materials to make this technology cheap and efficient. Light from fire remained in the life of humans for centuries but the sources kept on changing. Candle made from bee wax where the...
