Evil Vs Evil Short Story
There once was a king who was so bitter and brutal that one of his henchmen yearned for his death. However one day he surprised everyone with an announcement about him starting all over. After his transformation one of his henchmen had the courage to ask him what made him change? And the king answered, “As I was galloping through my forests I caught sight of a fox being chased by a hound. The fox escaped into his hole but not before the hound had bitten into its leg and slammed it for life. Later I rode into a village and saw the same hound there. It was barking at a man. Even as I watched, the man picked up a huge stone and flung it at the dog, breaking its leg. The man had not gone far when he was kicked by a horse. His knee was shattered and he fell to the ground, disabled for life. The horse began to run but it fell into a hole and broke its leg. Reflecting on all that had happened, I thought: ‘Evil begets evil. If I continue in my evil ways, I will surely be overtaken by evil’. So I decided to change”, stated by moralstudies.org. So what does this say about human nature? The king was willing to change to better his kingdom and what people thought of him. Jack represents the snake from Adam and Eve. As soon as the island is corrupted by fear, the first creature is identified as a “snake thing.” The snake thing actually represents the presences of satan in the Garden of Eden. “A snake-thing. Ever so big. He saw it” (Golding 35). Immediately there is something evil spotted on the island. Jack in many way represents the serpent “I went on. In Lord of the Flies, Jack uses the beast to manipulate the other boys by creating the beast as his tribe’s greatest enemy, idol, and system of belief all together.     The central theme of the text, Lord of the Flies, is power. The different aspects of power shown, is the invariable corruption of power, the reality of betrayal and the influence of fear.     Different characters provide different symbols. Jack is a symbol of savagery and anarchy. Golding relates this to the evil and cruel people in the world. When Jack first arrives on the island he is excited to have rules for their new settlement. Jack exclaims on pg. 33 “ We’ll have rules!” he cried excitedly. “Lots of rules!…” Jack changes his view on rules towards the end of the story because he rebels from Ralph’s leadership and starts his own clan. Jack’s character goes from a choirboy who doesn’t have that much power to a savage and power hungry character without guidelines. While Jack’s first attempt to kill the pig failed, his quote “ Before I could kill it-but-next time!” foreshadowed his future of savage hunting. When Jack shows signs of belligerence by arguing with Ralph, the meaning of a child is stressed.     Jack is the oldest of the group. He is a tall, thin, and bony boy with red hair and a freckled face. He symbolizes responsibility, barbaric behavior, evil, and irrational thinking. He symbolizes responsibility because he was responsible for the actions of his group, the hunters. As the head of the hunters, it was his job to make sure they were always on task and that they bring food (meat) for the rest of the group. He symbolizes barbaric behavior by the way he treats the littluns and Piggy. The natural instinct of any older human being is to comfort the little children when they are scared, frightened, and unsure of their actions. Jack frightens them even more by telling them that there was a beast that they would hunt it down. He betrays Ralph and the rest of the tribe by abandoning them and creating his own tribe, forcing half the group to join it. He is a savage because of the way he does things to get what he wants. Instead of simply asking, he raids Ralph’s camp to get fire and Piggy’s specs. He is evil because he refuses to hear out Ralph and Piggy and insists that he is right the whole time. Jack almost caused almost all of the catastrophes that happened in the book. He wasn’t thinking right in the way he led his tribe to act. He made them think that acting maliciously instead of being civil was the way to go. In the end, he set the whole island on fire just to hunt down Ralph so he could kill him. Jack had a dramatic change in his attitude that started to be revealed in Chapter 5 when he started to yell at Ralph, broke all the rules, and caused the whole assembly to leave.
