Evil Characters In Myths
The role of evil characters in myths is to both teach that if one allows negative emotions such as jealousy, greed, or lust take over one’s decisions there are negative consequences and to also explain that there is evil comes in many forms. When myths such as The Death of Balder and Osiris, Isis, and Horus explain the punishments those who are evil receive, they show didactic intentions. Both Loki and Set receive harsh punishments for their ill actions: Set is defeated multiple times at the hands of Horus and never reached his ultimate goal and Loki is forced to suffer eternal until he ultimately dies in battle, showing that wrongs committed will be punished. In addition to the didactic teachings, the stories of the evil serve as etiological

Throughout the epic, the idea that good conquers evil is constantly reinforced. However, these who are labeled as evil have motives that are not highlighted as greatly and as a result the antagonists’ deaths always seem to be just. In contrast to Beowulf’s heroism and the innocence of the people, those in the story are laced as good have committed cruel actions that lead to the “demon's’” revenge.…

    Evil in Dante and Chaucer

We in the twentieth century would be much more hard-pressed to define evil than would people of either Chaucer's or Dante's time. Medieval Christians would have a source for it -- Satan -- and if could easily devise a series of ecclesiastical checklists to test its presence and its power. In our secular world, evil has come down to something that hurts people for no explicable reason: the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, the burning of black churches in the South. We have taken evil out of the hands of Satan, and placed it in the hands of man. In doing so, we have made it less absolute, and in many ways less real.…

Evil is a common thing in all stories. The story tellers usually create monsters to represent these evils that are in the stories and many people can see the evil that they represent. Sometime this in not the case and those people need someone to tell them what that monster represents that applies to real life. In Greek Mythology women are often portrayed as women having unfortunate and miserable lives because of a god or goddess or both. One example of a woman who fulfills this description is Io. One day, Zeus falls in love with Io and as usual Zeus got his way and with some tender words he convinced Io of his love for her. With Hera's jealousy on top of Zeus, Zeus turns Io into a cow in order to protect her from Hera. Io being a frenzied cow gets an unfortunate life doing nothing better than wandering around. Another woman who is unfortunate in Greek Mythology is Echo. Echo is a nymph that was punished by Hera because Hera thought that Echo was having an affair with Zeus. To let out her anger, Hera forbids Echo from using…

Why is there evil in the world? Why are there different seasons in the year? These questions came up a lot in Ancient Greek Mythology. The Greeks were searching for answers and the only way they could come up with an explanation was to create a myth that explained the unexplainable. In Greek Mythology the paradox, a gift can be a curse, consistently appears in the myths. Many people’s greatest strength is also their weakness which can lead to their downfall. Some curses are justified but most aren’t fair at all. In many cases, in myths, it’s better not to accept a gift because it can turn on you and make everything worse. For example, how Hercules’ strength is his gift, yet that is what kills his family. Another factor in Greek Myths is how women were never the heroes. They were often the ones who were cursed, for example Cassandra, Pandora, and Semele all had wonderful gifts such as the ability to foretell the future, a trait from every god, and the gift of Zeus himself, but they were used against them. In Greek Mythology, often times someone who received a gift would have to be careful because it could be turned into a curse and would lead to their downfall.…

Evil can be used in two ways- when someone has done evil and when someone has suffered evil. Since God is good, God does no moral evil; however, because God is just, God punishes the wicked and thus causes the evil of punishment. People are the cause of their own evildoing. Furthermore, because learning is good a thing, we do not learn evil. It is people’s inordinate desires that drive their evildoings.…

While many enjoy a story where good conquers over evil, I do not think the story of Osiris, Isis, and Horus would have improved any had Set been killed. Isis’s pity for Set shows that evil has a face of the familiar; Set was her brother and the betrothed of her sister. By allowing Set to go free, Isis shows forgiveness, although it may appear to be “poor judgement” through the eyes of others. Giving her a cows head may seem like a light punishment by some, but it, again, shows forgiveness because she is still allowed to live out her life with her husband again. Set’s death would have symbolically meant that evil could be abolished and essentially wiped from the world. Better yet, the myth describes a world where anyone can have a lapse…

The topic of evil is discussed in multiple ways within the stories of Beowulf, Paradise Lost, Lord of the Flies, and “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. These writers’ opinions on evil vary. Evil is portrayed in many different ways. Is evil a choice that is made by an individual? Or is it merely a concept that humans have no control over? Although these writers may disagree on who will be defeated in the battle between good and evil and whether evil lives within every man, they agree on the concept that evil always brings negative consequences.…

In the opening scenes, Shakespeare portrays Othello as a noble character. Othello maintains his calm behavior until Iago taunts him with lies. Othello’s language transforms him into a monster due to his jealousy. "Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green eyed monster which doth mock" At first, he simply doubts his wife's loyalty. Othello starts to use the animal imagery that Iago used throughout the play (3.3.407).…
