Every Day Use
In The past days in are class we recently read this stories “Every Day Use “ and “A Walk To The Jetty “ the characters in this story shared similar character traits. Using Quotes From the stories I will show their similarities in the stories “Every Day Use” and “A Walk To The Jetty“ Character’s from both stories Shane the characters traits of disdain, pridefulness , ingratitude. The story everyday use should be named Everyday Disdain because of all the hatred that is shown from each family member. Each character has a problem with another character and continues to fight with them throughout the story. Mama states that when Maggie didn't follow Dee’s orders that “Her eyes blazed open” and she was upset for the rest of the story. And their is a constant theme throughout the story of pointing out Maggies flaws instead of focussing on her good traits. Mama states that “Maggie's brain is like an Elephants”. Her daughter has a mental disability and she now thrashing her. Her daughter can't help the way she is and her mom has no right to talk to her this way.
While a great amount of poor traits are shown, there are some wonderful traits that have been shown. The most common one is pridefulness. While the characters may show hatred and ignorance to each other, they all have a sense of pride and well being in who and what they are. For example, Annie hates almost everything about the Island she lives on. The people, the food, and most of all the Jetty! But she also has a little bit of pride in the place that she grew up in. For example she states, with a great sense of pride , that “The bed I am lying in my father built”.”Almost everything in my house my father has built”. Even though she hates almost every single thing about the Island she still has the ability to find some pride in what she does and how she does it.
Annie is they type of person who has no sense of appreciation or gratitude. She’s the type of person who can never be happy because she

"Everyday Use," short film was more story oriented as it showed what Mama only described in the text: "Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners, homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs, eying her sister with a mixture of envy and awe." (WALKER 120) Mama was explaining how Maggie would feel when Dee comes to visit. In the movie, viewers had to wait and see until Dee's arrival to see Maggie's reactions, it wasn't told by Mama, but rather interpreted on screen by a moving image. This was done by changing the point of view from first person to third person. The movie did have a voice over by Mama as Maggie and herself raked the leaves before Dee's arrival, but that was not the same as the story, as the dialog in the story starts on the day Dee arrives but talks about what they did the day before: "I will wait for her in the yard that Maggie and I made so clean and wavy yesterday afternoon."(WALKER 120) Mama is talking about what she did the day before, but in the movie she was shown doing it.…

The theme of a story often is displayed in the development of the protagonist or in the epiphany that the protagonist experiences. But in some stories, there may be more than one focal character, and the theme must therefore be inferred by examining the different experiences of more than one person. Stories can have a similar setting, point of view, theme, or sense of language and style. However, all of these points could be very different as well and could cover different theme or style. “Everyday use” as a title makes me envision something that may be taken for granted since it is used frequently, on an “everyday” basis, much like the act of breathing or waking up every morning and knowing the water will come out when you turn on the faucet. I believe the title, “Everyday use” was chosen specifically to symbolize the lives of Mama and Maggie in contrast to Dee’s more extravagant life. Their material possessions, like the butter churn or the quilts, are put to use daily as necessity items not as show pieces as Dee wanted to designate them as being.…
