Evan Hunter On The Sidewalk Bleeding Analysis
The story “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” by Evan Hunter was about the cultural differences within a city. Andy was one of the two gangs in the city and he was killed due to the hatred between both gangs. Andy focused on people and the jacket for survival as they had a symbolic meaning to him. The people had a symbolic meaning, as they were his only hope. They were stages of his life, as the first person who met him was the drunk. The drunk represents him when he first joined the royals, where he was ignorant of the killing between the gangs and decided that if he joined they won’t kill him. The couple was the second to meet him but decided not to help. This represents the time he started dating Laura and how when she didn’t want him to leave …show more content…
The jacket used to be something he felt was valuable when he was ignorant. Closely followed by how he wears his jacket on so they remember who he is. Then it signals regret as he takes it off in the rain as he is slowly dying. The jacket represents his ignorance in wearing out in the middle of the night where he is most likely to be killed. Where it is described as “It was 11:13 p.m., He had left the jump to get a package of cigarettes. He had told her he would be back in a few minutes” and it was near that moment when he got stabbed. His carelessness was when he didn’t listen to Laura and didn’t even think about his own life due to the jacket. His pride is when he thinks he won’t be attacked out in the middle of the night in the alley where no one could spot him. He continued to wear the jacket as if no one would care if he did. That is when they stabbed him and stated this “He had heard the voice saying, 'That's for you Royal! " signifying his pride in how he wore the jacket and lost his life because of it. The regret is when he thinks back to his past and current life on how he joined the royals and stayed with them and he remembers who he used to be before the jacket as stated by this “He lay struggling with the shiny wet jacket. His arms were heavy. Pain ripped fire across his body whenever he moved. But he squirmed and fought and twisted until one arm was free and then the other. He rolled away from the jacket and lay quite still, breathing heavily, listening to the sound of his breathing and the sounds of the rain and thinking: Rain is sweet, I'm

Throughout the story, "The Jacket", Young Gary's jacket represents many emotions. The main two I got from the reading was poverty and the young boys insecurity once he began to wear the jacket. When young Gary first walked into his bedroom and saw the new jacket on his bedpost he immediately disliked it. One of the representations of the jacket is poverty. He says, "I wanted to cry because it was so ugly and so big that I knew I'd have to wear it a long time." Towards the end of the story he says, "I wore that thing for three years." Another representation would be his insecurity. You know the young boy is insecure of his new jacket because at one point he says, " I sat on the bed, stood against the bed, and combed my hair to see what I look…

We meet the group as they discuss which boxer is the best in the world, when suddenly many policemen begin to appear, and begin to ask questions about a suspect they are searching for. Unfortunately, one policeman slips in some dog shit and his gun accidentally goes off, which results in all of the cops shooting at one particular window. The owner of the apartment (Mary) that just got shot up, returns home and begins a debate with the police who are interested in the whereabouts of her boyfriend. Eventually Mary, some cops and the narrator goes together into her apartment. The police suspect is not there, but the place is completely shot up and on the floor Mary’s dog lays dead from multiple bullet wounds. On the way back down from Mary’s apartment again, the police take notice of another apartment door and they inspect that apartment also, where they find the body of a young black boy who has also been shot and killed – an innocent victim of the earlier police gunfire.…

The chronological organization of this piece moves from confused to reflecting to understanding as the author reflects back onto his past. In the beginning, the man encountered his “first victim” which was a “white woman” that happened to also be walking “on a deserted street in Hyde Park.” Even though more than a decade has passed since this event, the author still looks back to the time where society has…

It shows that no one thinks that the anger "fits" the character. The character had “taken to wearing around your father’s hand-me-down anger. I wish that you wouldn’t. It’s a few sizes too big and everyone can see it doesn’t fit you, hangs loose in all the wrong places, even if it does match your skin colour.” (Kay 1-5). This shows that no one thinks that the anger "fits" the character, even though it matches his skin colour. This (the skin colour) ties into the conflict as it is the reason to why the character and his ancestors wore the anger in the first place: racial dispute. Furthermore, the fact that “everyone can see it doesn’t fit” the character shows that what he is doing is not necessarily having the effect that he wants it to have: like a person wearing their pants low- they want it to look cool but it just looks silly. In this case, the character wears anger to make others fearful of him, but instead it just looks out of place. Also, in this stanza, the author uses figurative language to show that the anger that the main character shows is something that has been happening in his family for generations, hence is called a “hand-me-down” as he inherited it from his father. And the fact that the conflict that they are wearing this anger for has not been solved yet, even after all these generations, proves that the…
