European Imperialism Research Paper
European nations traded for slaves, gold, and ivory along the west coast of Africa. By the 1880s Africa was under full assault as European nations competed with one another for control of the continent. What was the motive behind European policy extending a country’s power in Africa? The primary cause behind European Imperialism are economics, nationalism, and technology. One of the primary causes behind European Imperialism was economics. The European policy was extending power in Africa by their imports and exports. During 1854 they had a low import and export rate than during 1900 there was a higher import and export rate (British Empire: 1558-1995,1966). European policy was extending power in Africa by trading and their sea power. An example of nationalism is “...there teaching these her colonists… that their first aim is to be to advance the power of England by land and by sea”(John Ruskin). Nationalism is another cause of European Imperialism because of their trading and their sea power. Another primary cause behind European Imperialism was technology. The European development in Africa was by technological development and the use and significance. A example of technology was the steam engine which was first used in boats and used in locomotives. It was a more constant and forceful source of power than sails on ships; faster form of transportation (Technology and Imperialism). Technology was a driving force behind the European Imperialism in Africa because of their technological developments and their use and significance. The main causes behind European policy extending a country's power in Africa are economics, nationalism, and technology. Although these are some causes of European Imperialism in Africa there are many more reasons. Economics showed us the increase of imports and exports which extended power in Africa. Nationalism shows how trading and sea power extended power in Africa. Technology shows the technological developments and their use and significance extended power in

    In the 1880’s the New Imperialism era began, which was when the nations of Europe began an expansion into Africa. The New Imperialism era occurred because of breakthroughs in technology and because of the search for profits that encouraged the Europeans to conquer lands outside of their European borders. Three main European colonial powers during the fight for Africa were Belgium, Great Britain, and France. All three wanted to gain access to Africa’s resources as well as their trading systems. The policies of these three European colonial powers were driving forces of the outreach into Africa between 1871 and 1914 due to their own desire to expand their boundaries for economic, political, and social reasons by using direct force. Economically, colonial powers were causing issues as well as health problems for the natives due to famine and ill treatment. Politically, this was causing rebellious out breaks as well as devastating wars and the population decreased due to conditions or expectations of the people. This caused laws to be passed to help set up the standards for establishing a colony.
