Eulogy For Religion
1. Because Luke was a gentile Christian writing to a gentile audience, he wanted to show them that Jesus was loving and accepting of all people, not just Jews. To do this, Luke protrayed Jesus as someone who frequently interacted with "outsiders." His love to all people was unconditional, no matter their social status, gender, or place of origin; this implies to the gentile people that he will love them, no matter of the religion they were born into. Luke also protrays Jesus as a "flawed" character to furhtur promote this idea. Jesus' birth especially shows that he wasn't someone who fit into societies norms. He was lying in manger instead of a bed, not inside of a home, with parents that had many rumors going around about them, and he even had shepards visit him.
2. I think that it's extremely hard and pretty much impossible to do everything the Bible says to do, especailyl in modern day society. Consequently, I also believe that being a "good Christian" or a "good Jew" depends on if the person at question is following what God/Jesus taught about love and compassion towards others. Obviously, many people do not agree with my philosophy on the matter and think that religion is entirely about rules from centuries ago, stunting our progression as a modern society. Personally,

As someone who grew up without any religious influence from family in their lives and who had been very impacted by what the media portrays the Bible as, I had formulated my own opinion about it before even reading it. All I knew was that people used the Bible as a way to justify bigoted and cruel opinions and actions, and I was seriously against it. Now, I am able to see it from a more open-minded perspective and I'm able to recognize the overall messages better and those who twist the words of the Holy Book better as well. This class has also made me think more about relgion and what my personal relationship with relgion

Jesus set an example for his disciples and for all people to follow. His example and teaching was to show compassion towards everyone, men, women, Jews, Gentiles, righteous people, and sinners alike. He believes they should all be treated the same. Jesus did not always treat everyone in the same manner, but he never treated someone as if they were worthless.…

Luke’s theme is about new conversion and the rapid spread of Christianity, however, with the addition of the story of Mary and Martha it becomes confusing as to how this story fits in with the overall theme of the Gospel of Luke. However, Luke continues his theme with this story because he wants everyone to know the truth about Jesus. Jesus wanted Martha to stop doing the busywork and focus on the truth of Him and who He is. Before this passage, we have the story about the Good Samaritan who was there to help even when it was frowned upon socially. After this passage, we have where Jesus teaches about prayer. The passage about Mary and Martha go with the Good Samaritan story because Martha was doing what was expected by her culture and society, while Mary was going beyond it and sitting at the feet of Jesus.…

The books that we were required to read for Bible 115 class were Engaging God’s World – A Christian Vision Of Faith, Learning And Living by Cornelius Plantinga Jr. and The Call – Finding And Fulfilling The Central Purpose For Your Life by Os Guinness. Mr. Washington: the greatest sound in any community is the voices of the youth praising their creator! Ezekiel was a priest and a prophet (vs. 1:3), and his hairstyle was locks (vs. 8:3), like many of his sisters and brothers today! He also was among the captives of his people, we came from greatness, and by the “wheel” of his grace through faith, we must return. In the name of our savior Christ Jesus to the glory of our creator, thank you all for that heartfelt salute. May the Father of Lights shine his grace and goodness upon this community, especially the youth; my soul is blessed this day to be here among this generation. There are not many events these days, where the young and the old can become one in spirit and focus. That is one of…

One topic I found interesting from this chapter was the artist Durer. I liked his pieces The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse and Knight, Death, and the Devil. These paintings do indeed show his love of what the Bible teaches. These woodcuts and engravings make you want to look deeply at the paintings to discover the message they hold. Knight, Death, and the Devil gives a lesson that is hard to stay true to for every Christian whether they realize they need it or not. Wordly views and ideals surround a person every minute of everyday of his or her life, which can seem overwhelming and very difficult to fight against. Yet Durer is so true to his beliefs and love for the Scripture that he creates an image to show how important it is to not let the world dictate how you think and act.…

I would teach about slavery, and how I would decide what to teach them is based on the things I’m interested in. As a black female even though I didn’t go through slavery, it’s unfortunate to read articles on what happened to slaves back in the day and what they had to go through. When the Europeans occupied the North American continent the land was huge, the work to be done there was hard and there was scarcity of people to work in the land. In the seventeenth century, a Dutch ship, which was loaded with African slaves, was a solution and also a problem to North America. Slaves were mostly needed on enormous farms where a lot of cash crops namely tobacco, could actually be grown. When the American resolution ended, slavery became unsuccessful…

St. Luke the Evangelist was born at Antioch in Syria. It is believed that he was born a Greek and a Gentile. The main things St. Luke is noted for are being a physician, being a missionary with St. Paul and writing one of the four Gospels of Jesus. He also wrote the Acts of the Apostles. The Gospel according to St. Luke is the most descriptive of all four Gospels. St. Luke describes in detail the miracles and many parables of Jesus. The Gospel of Luke focuses on the poor and social justice. He emphasizes Christ’s compassion for sinners and for those who suffered. He also describes the life and teachings of Jesus. He was one of “the seventy” and worked with St. Paul traveling to Rome and converting Jews and pagans to Christianity. He was also with Paul during several of his confinements. . Saint Luke is often shown with an ox or a calf because these are the symbols of sacrifice - the sacrifice Jesus made for the world. St. Luke is known as the patron saint of physicians and surgeons. It has been proven that Luke lived a long life and died 84 AD.…

I have two memories of the Church—both of which are embarrassing. The first was during my First Communion, which is third of the seven sacraments where someone first receives the Eucharist (the body and blood of Jesus). For the ceremony, my parents dressed me in a terribly fit suit and at that age I was missing both of my front teeth—I looked ridiculous. Sometime during the ceremony I accidentally blew out my candle. I look around and every other kid still has their candle lit so I tried to fake it by hovering my hand around the top of the candle, pretending to protect the flame. I can hear my family chuckle behind me. I waited until the rest of the kids began blowing out their candles, then I just blew into my hand extinguishing the “invisible-flame.”…

When I first heard about this assignment the beginning of the quarter my first thought was “this is going to be uncomfortable.” Mainly because I don’t practice my own religion often anymore and already feel left out the few times a year I do go to church. My second thought was what religion I would choose to explore and understand better. I chose Judaism because while I sat there thinking of the numerous religions I have encountered throughout my life, the very first besides my own was Judaism. My family had moved to a new city when I was six years old, a more diverse city in all aspects, and our neighbor happened to be a Jewish family, who had a son that was about my age. As a child I honestly didn’t give it any importance, he was my friend…

Being a person who has little knowledge about the bible, I can say that it taught me a lot – A LOT. I have learned that having faith does not only mean believing in Him, but also knowing what He came through, what He did for us and what He sacrificed to us – His life. I became a person who is tougher, when it comes to faith, and more aware of God’s love to us. I’m really not attached to my religion though, but all I know is that I believe in Him, I have faith in Him, I serve him with all I have and that I love him as much as I love my neighbor. I also became more passionate, giving more concern not just for my friends and families but also to complete strangers as well. Also, I learned how to accept other religion’s faith and belief. It’s not because I’m not attached to my religion, but because I’ve come to respect, to a greater extent, other’s faith as well. And lastly, I have come to learn to look at RS courses not merely just academically but also mentally, emotionally and most of all spiritually.…
