Eulogy For Isabel
When I sat down to write this tribute, there were so many things I wanted to tell you all; from each adventure, every smile that was made because of Isabel’s gentleness & generosity, to every laugh and all the times I can possibly remember of her.. Good or bad.
When I had first met Isabel, I was boarding off from sea one sunny winters afternoon. What had caught my attention about her the second I laid eyes on her was her laugh, & the curls of her dark hair swirling in the wind; the first time I realized how beautiful she was.
With the brightest expression, she noticed me smiling at her. I apologized for watching & she said to me “Never be sorry for smiling!” following an offer of some bread to feed the gulls with her. (21-22)

Trying to look attentive while conversing with everyone was a challenge, being distracted by the sight of Isabel in the corner of my eye. (26)
Flashing forward to around the time of my first Christmas on Janus Rock as the lighthouse keeper, a bit of letters were delivered to me; one being from Isabel. (37)
I still remember the excitement & anxiousness of seeing her name. The letter was simply her checking in on me, making sure I had not been blown away or swept out at sea, or even worse.. eaten by a whale. (37-38)
Our first date was her idea… A picnic by the bay in Point Partaguese when my first 6 months on the light were over; almost the last day of the year 1920. (40-41)
From then on, I was surprised by how much I looked forward to seeing Isabel. I enjoyed most listening to her talk about the story of her life in Partaguese growing up, & it’s history.

She wanted to get married. (49)
The first few days of being on the Lights with her, she had explored the entire island with a map; naming everything from the coves & cliffs to the grassy fields.

Isabel is a young girl. Isabel is a slave. Isabel is a girl who is constantly juggling new problems that are thrown at her. In Laurie Halse Anderson’s book Chains, people walk right over Isabel without even a thought. Isabel still gets back up. Three quotes that I think resemble Isabel’s situations are; “Life is tough my darling, but so are you”, “You have brains in your head, feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose”, and “Hope is the little voice in your head that whispers ‘maybe’ when it seems the whole world is shouting ’no’”.…

I think Isabel deserves respect because she has many virtues good in a person. One of those is that she does the right thing. For example, when she finds the list of all the Loyalists who plan to kill George Washington, she turns it in to the patriots, even though her master would be furious if he found out.I think I would be scared to do it.Another virtue of hers is bravery. She keeps a fair head even with a new master and mistress and calms Ruth.I think that she is probably scared but tries to hide it so Ruth does not worry. Which brings us to the next reason, which is that she loves Ruth so much. When Ruth has a seizure, she stands up for her so she does not get sold.I think if my brother Arlo had a seizure then, I would stand up for him, but…

In the 1920’s, my ideal date would take place in New York City, and would start around noon and probably end sometime in the late night. First, I picked up my date at her parent’s house. She had a nice picnic lunch packed, and we were going to walk to Central Park. The picnic consisted of dry sausage, prosciutto, and a mixture of olives, an assortment of cheeses, some tomatoes in olive oil, and a loaf of Italian bread. It was a long walk to Central Park, but we were hungry, and we knew that once we ate, it would be a relaxing walk back. We had our picnic on a little hill in the park, overlooking a nice pond. All around us, there were trees with their leaves changing colors, and children throwing a ball around. On the walk back, we talked about many things, like life, politics, jobs, business, and what we eventually would want to do with our lives. After that, we talked about what we would like to do later. We decided to stay at her parent’s house for dinner, and then maybe go to a nightclub afterwards. When we got back, I helped her parents set up the table for dinner while she got changed and freshened up. After a nice Italian dinner of broccoli rabe and sausage, some more Italian bread, and a dessert of cannolis and gelato, my date and I decided to go out to a nightclub. We took the New York City subway, and I could have sworn that we saw Henry Ford standing not too far away from us. When we got to the club, The Back Room, we found that it was already quite crowded, and that everybody else was dressed like us. The guys all wore suits and ties, some with hats and some without. The women, however, were a different story. They all wore clothes from the new “flapper” fashion, but that’s where the similarities stopped. My date was wearing a sleeveless dress that ended just before the knees, shoes and stockings, and she had her hair cut short, was wearing a pearl necklace and carried a purse. We spent most of the night there, smoking and drinking beer…

Hello and thank you all for coming. Today we are gathered to mourn the loss of a spectacular individual who stood next to me through the thick and thin, through the good and bad, and has left my heart with a crater big enough to engulf the world, Mrs. Mallard. She was a faithful and devout woman whom I am proud to call my wife. We spent many years together, during which I always tried to make her happy. Yet recently all the memories of her and I have come flooding back to me in tidal waves of emotions, and after consideration I feel I have not done enough. I did not cherish every second of every minute of every hour I was with her and it devastates me at this time, but that’s how it always goes I suppose. But not for her. Mrs. Mallard ensured my life was as simplistic and easy going as she could. Whether it was her loving support, physical labors, or the smiles she would give me which could outshine the moon. She would always know what I needed and would move mountains to make sure I had it. Her affection was so strong that it ultimately caused her passing. After being told I had perished in a mining incident she become so distressed that her heart could not handle the news that I was still alive. She had always had complications with that immense heart of hers, it was her Achilles heel. The one thing which chained her from ascending to the perfect woman, the one trade off which god decided he needed to bestow upon her so she would not take the role of a demi-god. However I know now that she is the most eloquent and beautiful angel heaven has ever seen and they will treasure her in ways I never could. This is the only fact which has kept me sane through this abysmal time. Everyone will now be able to pay their individual respects to Mrs. Mallard, and once again thank you for coming.…

I remember the first time I stayed awake throughout the night till a beaming light peaked through the window and hit my face like the touch of a baby's hand. The knots and tangles I feel in my stomach have also reached my hair as I pull parts of my day out of the strands.…
