D.B.’s usual exercise pattern consists of long walks throughout the day. D.B. states that back when she used to live in Poland, it was very common for people to walk all throughout the town, even if they owned cars. From this, D.B. has adapted this pattern here too, in America; thus, she often walks to the grocery store, to the park, and anywhere else within a few miles- such as other plazas around her neighborhood. Other than this, D.B. says that she never attempted to participate in any other forms of exercise when she was younger, so now she doesn’t do any either; however, D.B. added that she…
Describe how these similarities and differences affect your life. How has your own cultural background contributed to the mix that is the dominant American culture? How did you learn your culture? Have you developed a new culture as an adult? If so, what influenced you to do so?…
I have found that a person’s culture has an impact on which physical activities individuals participate in to stay healthy. Surprisingly enough, the public I interviewed all had a distinct approach to exercise and with these 3 completely different people, I additionally realized that the older one gets, the less energy one needs to achieve the exercise of their choice. All in all, these folks do have one thing in common aside from their varying ways of exercising – staying healthy.…
Specifically, Boas, in The Methods of Ethnology, argued against the various traditional evolutionary theories proposed by Morgan, Marx, Tylor and Spencer. Stating simply that these theories had a particular resilience, but lacked any sort of empirical evidence, Boas argued that the evolutionary theory was based on the counterfactual assumption that our culture was the most advanced and all others were merely following us (Boas, 134). After attacking the diffusionists by noting that their data was not competent enough, methodological difficulties, he responded to the view that historical particularism (Historical particularism argued that each society is a collective representation of its unique historical past. It showed that societies could reach the same level of cultural development through different paths) was atheoretical. How things are and how they come to exist can give only broad outlines of chronological events. Hence cultures are dynamic and in constant flux; every phenomenon is not only an effect, but also a cause. (Boas, 137) A point, taken to the extreme by Kroeber, but also put forth by Boas was that certain problems may be solved in only particular ways. Because humans are similar in their ``infrastructure'', they would tend to solve these problems in similar ways, leading towards the creation of similar traits. Hence, it is not about cultural achievement, but rather about particular conditions that exist at the moment when the new effect is obtained…
The figure for women who did regular physical activity was higher than their male counterparts in 4 out of the 6 age groups (except for 2 groups: 15-to24-year-olds and 65 or more). This differential was maximum in those aged 35 to 44 with the percentage of woman and man were 52,5% and 39,5% respectively.…
In the forgotten recesses of Camp Hovey, resides a small platoon of MP 's, standing in small groups in the battalion motor pool, it must be 9:30 in the morning and its must be Monday, Feb. 13th. Behind the large HUMMWV 's stands a small tight nit group of males, their ranks range in the e-4 to e-6 range, laughing together. This is the group that always stands away from the rest of the platoon, secluding themselves, forming a group within a group, or their own subculture. This group has the same similarities in the topics they discuss, usually it being the dysfunctions of the platoon, them main topic focusing on the platoon sergeant and second lieutenant. They all agree that the leadership that is being provided is insufficient and is the main reason that the platoon has reached this point of demotivation and the unwillingness to follow any orders given.…
In recent years, California has made budgetary cuts to safety net programs to balance the state budget. The California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program has been one of the most affected. CalWORKs’ goals is to provide immediate income support by contributing a cash grant to the household and cultivating long term self-sufficiency for its clients. CalWORKs has had a number of cuts that is reshaping the program one component at a time, including cuts to the welfare-to-work employment services. These cuts will directly affect those clients who are likely to find and keep a jobs and those who need intensive support if they hope to find and maintain stable employment. In addition to the budgetary cuts, clients on…
Arriving at the Jehovah’s Witness meeting I was very nervous about what was to come. I knew that nothing radical was going to happen, there was going to be now speaking in tongues, or dramatic rituals, but because I knew I was entering into a different belief something just did not feel right. Although the feeling of the meeting was not exactly comfortable, I learned a lot from my observations. On Thursday March 21, 2013 I attended a Bible study and theocratic ministry session at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Marion.…
Sarah’s upbringing in such an affluent household meant that she was held to a certain level of standards and is expected to act a specific way according to the way her parents have brought her up. She is a bright and smart girl, which is shown in the fact that she exemplifies exceptional grades and is taking a majority of honors classes. The profile we were given about Sarah did not specify the type of friends that she had previously, which could be speculated that she did not have very many friends. Meeting these new girls, who showed interest in gaining a friendship with Sarah caused her to question her good judgment when it came to obeying the rules set forth by her parents, which she followed in the past. She has never missed her curfew in the past.…
Original materials are indispensable for my dissertation. I am going to use a large amount of primary sources in not only the National Archives, but also various presidential, military, and institutional libraries. In these archives, the majority of the documents created prior to the 1990s are not digitalized. Furthermore, my research field has not been frequently studied by other researchers. Thus, the related documents are usually not among the few documents digitalized by these archives. Although I could request photocopies of documents from the libraries in which there are only a few pages of files of my interest, several archives that I will visit hold dozens, even hundreds of boxes of documents that I need to consult, making photocopies…
For this exercise I took about ninety photos over the course of an hour and a half, attempting to portray some of the happenings at the 9/11 Memorial. Out of all the photos, I chose these four because they display how expansive the memorial is, in terms of meaning and significance. Some of my other photos are interesting and portray many of the elements I am interested in, however, these few stuck out and seemed unique from the rest, further adding to my ethnographic research. Although, it should be noted that all four do involve similar themes of what constitutes ‘space’ and ‘interaction.’ The pictures depict other ways of interacting with the memorial that I did not initially conceptualize as such and added new scopes of determining the…
