Ethnocentrism has both positive and negative effects in ones personal life.
Advantages of ethnocentrism:
1) They feel proud in their group. 2) They reject norms and culture of others. 3) They think that their culture is real one. 4) They judge others according to the values of their own society. 5) They think that their cultural elements are correct and natural.
Disadvantages of ethnocentrism:
1) Ethnocentrism separate different cultures. 2 ) It leads us to make false assumptions about cultural differences. 3) It misjudges other people. 4) It often distorts communication between human beings. 5) It leads us to make premature judgments. 6) It causes division between members of different religions. Every one learns ethnocentrism:
1) The small child says “my toys are better than yours.” 2) We talk about British drivers driving “on the wrong side” why not just say “opposite side” or even “left hand side”. 3)We talk about written Hebrew as reading “ backward” why not just say from “right to left” or “In opposite direction” to English.
Conclusion:
Ethnocentrism is powerful force that weakens human relations .Despite the cultural differences, we are still human .There is no intrinsic difference between a Jew and Christen, a black and white, a Chinese citizen and German citizen and so forth.
