When I hear the word “race”, the first thing that I think of is a person’s skin color, facial features and the texture of their hair. Although I am colorblind, I can’t help but to think of this when I hear the word race. This is due to the fact that the majority of the time when we fill out an application or any paperwork of importance the question of race is raised. I’m not sure why it matters, your experience and education seems more important to me. It seems as if some people still want to separate us depending on the color of our skin. Being that there’s so many races mixing, there’s no such thing as a pure race. Race seems to be unimportant to me. Ethnicity is a word that I prefer and enjoy when speaking of culture. Ethnicity makes me think of everybody’s struggle dating back from their ancestors to the present. Where did your ancestors originate? Where did you come from? Ethnicity is ones background and cultural differences. For example just because I am considered black doesn’t mean that I am from Africa; which means that I will be considered an African American. I thought for years that I was an African American till an African man that I was friends with broke it down to me and gave me some knowledge to read. He is considered an African American because he’s from Africa and now resides in America. I am considered to be a black American because I’m from America. This is weird being that my ancestors were American Indians. Your ethnicity is the group that others place you. I do have my personal opinion on all of this and why America still tries to identify us by race. Since my opinion was asked I felt the need to tell the truth on how I feel. Race and ethnicity are important in America because some people in the government still strives for division and don’t want us to come together as one. It seems as if the government gets more powerful when we separate ourselves from each other. If we all were to come together I…

Growing up in a diverse community has its advantages. It is amazing to see people trying to guess each other’s race and ethnicity. Innocent as it may seem at a young age to do this, it may have been the precursor to feelings towards the opposite race. The United States is a melting pot of different races coming together for one purpose – to have a good life. This means raising a family, having a good job, buying a car and home without fear of being discriminated against. In the stories by two diverse women shows how race and ethnicity played a large part in developing their lives.…
If we were to go out on the streets today and ask “what is the difference between race and ethnicity?”, most people would probably answer “I don’t know” or “ They are the same thing”. One of the most confused concepts of defining one another is the distinguishing of race and ethnicity. In the past, people either thought one was the other or there was simply no difference. Labeling people in the world is often done without proper knowledge and can lead to making a false accusation or offending someone. Race is associated with one’s biological ancestors, such as your physical appearance. While ethnicity is the identity with people who share similar cultural tradition.…

The belief that race is merely based on the color of a person’s skin has been the most common used method for defining racial boundaries in the modern world. However, this is not an accurate representation of how human beings should be classifies. According to authors, Omi and Winant, identifying an individual’s race on the basis of physical attributes is the most superficial factor in determining a person’s race (2). These authors, unlike many other scholars in the world do not define race based on an individual’s physical attributes. They define race as being a social concept due to the fact that they recognize that the classification of race varies broadly across the world. As stated by the authors, “In our view it is crucial to break with…
The definitions of race are largely dependent on societal and biological factors. Race refers to a person's physical characteristics, or phenotypes. Race is largely focused on skin color. Ethnicity is based on a shared origin or way of life. Ethnicity looks at culture, nationality, language and history. Race is determined by how you look while ethnicity is determined based on the social and cultural groups you belong to. While ethnicity has a basis in the biological sciences, the idea of race is socially constructed. Race assumes a shared ethnicity; however there is no evidence to make the assumption that all of those with the same skin color shares an ethnicity.…
There is a need to deliver the message that white privilege exists and perpetuates the unequal treatment of minorities compared to the white population in America. The exigence of the text draws from the urgent need for change for marginalized and minority communities. The relevancy of this issue comes from the many cases and incidents that have occurred regarding race and ethnicity in the past decade. From the slayings of two unarmed African American men, Aston Sterling and Philandro Castile, to the “light” sentence of 6 months in prison for Bruce Turner for rape, it is evident that America has a race and ethnicity issue. America has witnessed the legal system fail to bring justice to colored people for many years. This would include the acquitted…
