Ethics: China's Tainted Milk Question 2
Question 2: What the future reputational damage affect and how could it be measured?

There is lots of news and rumors spread about Baidu.com have received some payment from tainted milk manufacturer to not advertising any news about them. There is argument that these rumors have no evidence. But, many knew that this company integrated paid advertisements into its search listing. So, users will question the reliability of information that Baidu.com display to them. Of course this will damage public’s trust. This is because the user somewhat feel like being cheated by them because of not revealing the true story of what happen and the true information. User want a truth and reliable information which Baidu.com failed to provide. Once the public’s trust is completely lost, it is hard to gain it back. It takes time to get back user trust but for sure user will not trust them 100% anymore. If user boycott and stop using baidu.com as their main search engine, company will face bankruptcy. How the company is view could be measured by how many people use and visit the site. The number of viewer or user may be lower after that rumors came out. This indicator can be a tool to measure the damage of public trust. Other that tunes out public’s trust, these rumors also may vanish investor’s interest to invest in this company. These sorts of rumors give a bad image of Baidu.com. When company image was drowning out, investors of course will have no interest in the company anymore and future investor also may change their mind to not invest in the company. If those investors are gone, company will have no more money to survive in the business. Bad rumors affect the company image, and company image will affect the share price. These rumors may make the share price going down. The drop of share price and the number of investors withdraw from the company may be the tools to measure investor’s interest and trust towards the company.

In our new age of democracy and laissez-faire markets, there is an immense sense of freedom and trust in the system. Not only do we have unrestricted competition in the market but also access to widely circulated information due to advancements in technology. Along with the advent of the Internet and the rise of social media usage comes the idea of being monitored on the Internet. When we use the Internet on a daily basis, we are subjecting ourselves to a number of different risks and even while there are “disclosure” or privacy agreements, they scarcely do enough to protect us. Big corporations have access to and can precisely monitor what we are browsing on the web. Furthermore, they can use this information to specifically cater to our interests and push us to buy specific items through advertisements.…

In traditional search, Microsoft’s Bing search engine and Facebook, which passed Google as the most popular website in the world, pose threats as people desire more personalized and social media-related search information. Searches for local information, such as restaurant reviews or directions, are 20 percent of all Google searches and half of all mobile or smartphone searches. Yet, local-related search advertising is a weakness for Google, but a strength for Groupon, Facebook Places, Living Social, Foursquare, and Bing. Although Google’s Android smartphones have more market share than Apple’s iPhone, the Android software is open source, so Google makes no money except for built-in Google Ads and services. Likewise, Google trails Apple and Amazon in the number of publishers who use their software, devices (i.e., smartphones, tablets, book readers), and online stores to sell electronic versions of newspapers, magazines, books, music, TV shows, and movies. Finally, Google’s Chrome web browser (13% market share) competes with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (55%), Mozilla’s Firefox (22%), and Apple’s Safari (7%).…

It’s so easy to create a professional website these days, one that looks trustworthy and reliable. Of course, that does not mean that the information contained within it is also reliable. You would think that would be obvious, we would all like to think that we’ve impervious to bullshit. Alas, that is not the case. We get tricked, mislead, and manipulated, and very often we’re totally unaware of it.…

In this squib, I defend Norcross’s claim that being unable to stop factory farms’ abuse of animals does not make it morally acceptable for one to eat meat that comes from that practice. The objection that Fred is able to stop the suffering of puppies if he personally stops the eating of cocoamone is irrelevant to someone consuming factory-farmed meat even if refusing to eat it would not end production. It is morally wrong to participate in the practice of factory-farmed animals. (Norcross, pg.232)…

A 2016 study by Pew Research Center using 4,654 respondents was conducted. Pew’s American Trends Panel (ATP) who completed a series of surveys between Jan. 12 and Feb. 8, 2016 on the modern news consumer. Results showed that “Social media...is trusted by a slim majority only 4 percent of web-using adults have a lot of trust in the information they find on social media. And that rises to only 7 percent among those who get news on these sites. “. This mistrust is a result of several factors. Name recognition is easier done with a newspaper or television program. Once a news article is shared online the logos of the source may not follow and the by line may be tiny. It is then not suprising to learn that “ In a real time analysis 4 in 10 of those who got their news from a website could recall the source every time. Among those who got news 3 times or more from a link in a given week…” Whether the source of news can be recalled only matters if the source is providing facts. Who is responsible for making sure the public is provided with factual information? According to those polled it is not the reader. 83% of all voters polled think its the news media’s responsibility to fact check. 65% think its a major responsibility, 16% not at all. There is a difference in how information is respected among age groups. Loyalty to…

Yahoo while operating in China chose to abide by the request of the Chinese government to violate the personal information of Tao, and provide them the details of the poster on the forum. It is important to understand that while operating an international company it can be expected that certain cultural norms and laws will not be the same as that of the home country of the company. Yahoo was forced to operate in one of the most sophisticated internet control systems in the world, in which the government highly regulates what can be said and advertised on the web. Yahoo by giving up the personal information of Tao showed that they valued profit over protecting personal information of customers. Congressional Representative Christopher H. Smith stated it plainly by saying that a company that behaves such as Yahoo in this case expresses that the company’s profit has made it, “dull to reality”.…

With regard to customer aspect, it might be taken for granted that we are referring to billions of active users on this website. But when we look further into this company and its product, the surprising truth is that the users and their personal information are actually the product rather than the customer, at least from the financial standpoint. Advertising composes 84% of the company’s total revenue, which was $1.18 billion for the second quarter of 2012 according to its official financial reports. Then we found out that the advertisers are Facebook’s real customers, and what confronts this company is a fiercely competitive market. Although Facebook declared that 70% of its advertising campaigns resulted in a return on ad spend of 3x or better, and 49% of campaigns showed 5x or better, Facebook adverting is still generally undervalued by the marketers given the factor of being the last ad viewed or clicked before a conversion outweighs all other criteria, and Facebook advertising usually comes into play earlier in the…

Social media marketing is a process where a company tries to draw traffic to their website through other social networks. This is not a new concept; nevertheless brands are continuously finding it hard to gain power through the social sphere. Many believe search engines such as Google, is where customers look for their information. However, Google+, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest have become the new search engines in recent years. Through these new search engines, information is passed from person to person and is finally accepted because it comes from someone else who is believed to be a trusted party, not the company directly. The key word in this topic is “trust”. In the online world there is a lack of trust; there is only 58% consumer trust on websites. It is therefore the aim of brands to break this barrier and build trust with customers through social media marketing. The question is how do they build this trust?…
