Ethical Use Of Drones Essay
The Central Intelligence Agency or in other words known as the CIA have recently used drones to help detect and destroy terrorist before they do damage to our country and civilians. In the article Rethinking The Criterion For Assessing Cia-Targeted Killings: Drones, Proportionality And Jus Ad Vim, by Megan Braun and Daniel Brunstetter, the authors convey a determined tone to portray the aspects of drones scanning civilians to detect terrorist. “In his 2012 speech on the morality, legality and prudence of the USA’s use of drones to carry out lethal strikes against suspected terrorists, John Brennan (2012) (then White House counterterrorism adviser and now director of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)) lauded the ability of drones to ‘conform to the principle of proportionality, the notion that the anticipated collateral damage of an action cannot be excessive in relation to the anticipated military advantage.” The use of drones can prevent the military and terrorist to kill innocent people having nothing to do witht the feud going on. Drones can save lives as easily as they are able to take them away. They may be light and we may believe they may not cause damage to anything or anyone but when a drone is falling from the sky heading thousands of feet to the ground it can cause severe damage to people, buildings, and other sacred things we have. If drones are being designed to stop terrorist attacks and saves lives they should be tested numerous amount of times before they are anywhere near a town searching for possible suspects. People put their trust in the government to keep them safe, and if falling drones is what is going to kill them instead of a terrorist attack it would be okay to go against wanting to have drones circulation the

While these numbers are great, they can be even further reduced with the introduction of AI. The programs that are being worked on for the drones are set to take over for pilots meaning that the overhead for drone flights will be even less. The biggest question that’s raised by this addition is, are the drones smart enough? With human life as the gambling chip, the test of drones with AI is something that can’t be solidly agreed upon. If a drone pilot makes a mistake, that person can be tried and given a sentence but if the drones AI made the decision, than who’s to blame? This ambiguity has led to major halts in the implementation of AI within the drones. Eight to seventeen percent of drone strike casualties are civilians. This means that almost 1,047 civilians were killed in Pakistan at the hands of drones. This is a high number and considering it’s on a lower scale of deployment, this number could be even higher. Drones are a relatively new technology and their deployment is limited due to the subject matters sensitivity internationally and locally. Research at Stanford University and New York University concluded that people who lived in the drone areas experienced horrors that were more far reaching than just the strikes. Town’s people within these areas must conduct themselves normally within their community; buying fruit, going to school, and work and all with the constant buzzing of drones overheard.
