Ethane Monologue
They know. Allys told them. It’s all over. The car ride back kills me. Ethan and I sit in silence. Neither of us daring to utter a word, but I hear his voice in my head.

I told you not to trust her Jenna. Her parents know, it’s not long before they inform the authorities and then-

That won’t happen. We have a plan. We took precautions.

Precautions, they’re going to hide you, in Italy-, and for how long will that go on? How long will you live your life in fear?

I’m illegal Ethan.

“We can run away Jenna.” Ethan blurts out

“How will that be any different.”

“It will. We can change our identity, move away. We can hide anywhere. No one will know”

Ethan continues his desperate plans for my escape, but I find myself drifting, wondering where Ethan’s anywhere might be, caught up in a world full of maybes and what-ifs.

We have to be realistic. He can’t hide me from the world. There's only one other option, the escape plan. I have to do it. We both know. I will have to say goodbye, to Mr.Bender, Ethan, and possibly Father and Clair.

What should I do? I have to make a decision.

Stay with Ethan and run away by ourselves only to spend the rest of our lives as teenage outcasts. Or go home, and be whisked away to Italy.

“Jenna, it’s the only way” Ethan panics his eyes nervously staring into the distance.

“Take me home” I say.

There that settles it. Three mere words seal my fate. I am going to Italy, to begin my life all over again. How many times will I have to start

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Where there is a marriage without love, there will be love without marriage.” (Benjamin) Marriage is the foundation for social order because it restrains us from self centeredness and self indulgence. However, with the wrong significant other, one can find themselves on the path to adultery. (Craven) Ethan Frome is a story of a family caught in a deeply rooted domestic struggle. In the novel, the main character Ethan is caught in a love triangle between his wife Zeena, and his maid Mattie. There are numerous themes and conflicts throughout the context. However, within the themes of weakness, isolation, poverty, loves and death, the author brings in five different symbols. A symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else, esp. a material object representing something abstract. (Symbolling) Moreover, they allow the characters to articulate their emotions more clearly to the reader, which is very useful in bringing light to the story, and it illuminates the meaning that cannot be expressed in words. For example, a dark room symbolizes darkness, depression, gloominess, and hopelessness; therefore we would link that part of the story with darkness. Although, some symbols are easy to define, others require more research and reading. Likewise, through reading Ethan Frome, the color red, pickle dish, cat, setting, and light and darkness all highlight the major conflicts that arise throughout the context. (Wharton)…

And in Ethan Frome, it is Ethan Frome that leads the story into tragedy and his tragic flaw is his silence. The protagonist Ethan Frome is not able to express himself, his feelings and his loneliness to anyone around him. This eventually leads to a failed marriage, a miserable life, and to the tragic ending. Without communication, he ruins his life and his relationship with everyone around him. “She seemed infinitely father away from him and more unapproachable” (Wharton 81). If Ethan is brave enough to talk to Mattie about his feelings and truly expressed himself to her, things may have been different. Instead, he keeps it all to himself and eventually is more isolated then ever. In the end, his silence brought about suffering and sorrow to everyone around him including himself, and left the place in…

Sulfur and ammonia, the stench of the chemicals clung to the air coupled with the macabre scent of burnt flesh, a smell that simultaneously reminded one of a hospital and a barbecue. Three bodies lay torn asunder and charred on the streets of Tiber city, jagged black lines burnt into the surrounding brick walled alleyway. Sebastian Thorn was familiar with such scenes of flagrant violence, the handy work of an unlicensed mage, lightning was what had turned these people into charred corpses and burned the lines of dancing snakes into the walls, the question was why. What was the motivation for cutting down three innocent civilians, it only put the unlicensed mage at risk. There was something more to this story, he could feel it in his blood,…
