Ethane Laville's Home: A Narrative Fiction
Laine Burgess had felt hollow and empty ever since the death of her beloved sister, Tara Burgess. She had never expected to find comfort with her old friend, Ethan Barris. Carefully worded letters had recently been exchanged between the pair. Ethan had finally mustered up the courage to request Lainie’s attendance at his home. After countless letters, he was left with a desire to speak to her in person. She had debated with herself about whether or not to go. Lainie was unsure as to whether she was ready to see Ethan again. It took her a good while to decide; she considered each option many times. Eventually, she had replied with a simple ‘yes’.
Laine Burgess walked down the carefully paved streets. Her heels were clicking on the tiled ground.

His feet shuffled nervously and he was running a shaky hand through his hair. Ethan was constantly straightening out his handmade black suit. Thoughts raced through his head like cars on a racetrack; each individual thought was fast and unpredictable. A knock on the door snapped him out of his trance. Without looking, Ethan immediately knew that it was Lainie on the other side of the door. The box in his jacket pocket suddenly felt a lot heavier.
Ethan approached the door timidly. He felt like an outcast in his own home; the surroundings felt foreign and out of place. Ethan opened the door, welcoming Lainie in with a genuine smile. Lainie greeted him kindly, before turning around to place her coat on one of his chairs. When she turned back around, she was shocked. Ethan was down on one knee, holding out a ring for her to see.
Lainie’s mind was instantly racing. Her voice was caught in her throat. In fact, she felt as though her whole body was frozen still. Time slowed down and suddenly she felt as though she was the only person in the whole world. Ethan Barris’s familiar and curious eyes stared up at her. She blinked multiple times, not believing the sight. Ever since the death of her sister, Lainie had been lonely and depressed. After she had started swapping letters with Ethan, she felt happier and whole again. She took a deep breath, staring at the man in front of

“Just put place a little trust in him, Delta. There has to be an adequate reason that we’re bringing her along,” Walker responds, slamming the trunk shut. Delta shakes her head, ready to retort a response, when Eleanor walks out of the house. She looks much more put together than before, her blond hair in a neat braid and not a trace of the tear that were there before. But there’s still a haunting looking behind her eyes, one of fear and, under that, frustration. She strides down the stairs, towards the car.…

When Ethan is supposed to drop Mattie off for there final goodbye, they take a detour and go sledding and with that detour, they finally acknowledge there love for each other. The narrator states “The words were like fragments torn from his heart. With them comes the hated vision of the house he was to go back to-of the stairs he would have to go up every night, of the woman who would wait for him there. And the sweetness of Matties avowal, the wild wonder of knowing at last that all that had happened to him had happened to her too, made the other vision more abhorrent , the other life more intolerable to return…

Ethan’s First attempt of escape involves his sickly mother. Before Ethan met his wife, Zeena, he felt trapped by his mother and by Starkfield’s emptiness. Ethan had hoped to become an engineer, but despite attending school, his dreams were never fulfilled, because of his mother who had grown sick after his father’s death, and Ethan was left to care for both his mother and his family’s farm. Ethan’s obligation to care for his mother materializes into a hefty, oppressive burden until, Zeena, his cousin, rescues him and substantially lifts his burden off his shoulders. Zeena’s appearance in Ethan’s life saves him, for as she appeares “human speech was heard again in the house” (Wharton, 35). Zeena’s appearance brings life into Ethan’s lonely world. When Ethan’s father died, his mother grew increasingly silent, and rarely spoke. Because of this, he lacked human reaction, and in turn, grew lonely as well. As his mother became more silent, Ethan’s world became emptier and colder. But because of Zeena, Ethan is saved from the cold, lonely silence which imprisons him; Zeena brings warmth into his life once again. The narrator tells his audience, “Zeena’s volubility was music in [Ethan’s] Ears. He felt he might have ‘gone like his mother’ if the sound of a new life had not come to steady him” (Wharton, 35). Had…

Although Frome’s actions seem to contain merit, his vacuity is what causes him to live in constant moral isolation. The author foreshadows Ethan’s fate with an allusion to a grave: “SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF ETHAN FROME AND ENDURANCE HIS WIFE…” (Wharton 70). This depicts Frome’s tragic end to a great extent, because he does not die a physical death, but rather a mental demise. Frome’s poor judgement of allowing Mattie to convince him to commit suicide resulted in him being trapped in moral isolation. Furthermore, it resulted in Mattie becoming paralyzed, while Zeena was left to tend to both individuals for the rest of their lives. Frome was left to endure the consequences of his plight. He was also left with a resentful Mattie, who realized that Frome had truly destroyed her. Frome was a “prisoner for life” (Wharton 117) and would continue to be tormented by the constant reminder of his failure and lack of…

And in Ethan Frome, it is Ethan Frome that leads the story into tragedy and his tragic flaw is his silence. The protagonist Ethan Frome is not able to express himself, his feelings and his loneliness to anyone around him. This eventually leads to a failed marriage, a miserable life, and to the tragic ending. Without communication, he ruins his life and his relationship with everyone around him. “She seemed infinitely father away from him and more unapproachable” (Wharton 81). If Ethan is brave enough to talk to Mattie about his feelings and truly expressed himself to her, things may have been different. Instead, he keeps it all to himself and eventually is more isolated then ever. In the end, his silence brought about suffering and sorrow to everyone around him including himself, and left the place in…

By denying Zeena a single positive attribute while presenting Mattie as the epitome of glowing, youthful attractiveness, Wharton renders Ethan’s desire to cheat on his wife perfectly understandable. The conflict does not stem from within Ethan’s own heart—his feelings for Mattie never waver. Instead, the conflict occurs between his passions and the constraints placed on him by society, which control his conscience and impede his fulfillment of his…

All that nervous energy that bounced in him, slammed his heart into his chest, kicked him in his stomach and fried his nerves was all gone and he felt incredibly hollow. Now his face itched from being held in a certain position and his lungs fluttered when they finally expanded. His ribcage was gone and his heart was reluctantly easing itself back to it’s normal pace. He stretched his fingers before him and considered, that maybe, maybe he was overreacting over a crush, but it was L of all people, so he stewed in it. He continued on alone, but didn't feel like walking, so he sat down before one of the films that allowed the survivors to tell their stories during the Holocaust. He half listened half pitter-pattered on his phone until someone sat close to him, he scooted over. Then he felt a very small tap on his arm. He looked up and found a faceless young woman holding this baby, this gorgeous, fat, wide eyed baby. Dark eyes, soft dark skin, and smooth curly hair. The baby gave him a gummy smile and tapped on his shoulder…

His breath was cold and shallow, a soft smoke escaping his mouth every time he managed to take a full lungful of air. The man stared downward at his dark, brown shaded hand, trembling softly. He caught ahold of himself, and focussed back at the window, slightly covered in a layer of frost. The drapes, normally a vibrant burgundy tone, were pulled away, allowing him to catch sight of the woman he was after. Ezra Lynn. So many times he had watcher the woman walk in and out of the old, redwood door, but never once did he make the move that he had been yearning for. Months have passed since he started stalking the girl, this young woman, deprived of hope or care. Yet, there she was, still sitting in her home, alone, mocking him. Mocking him with…
