Ethan Paragraph
The statement that “Ethan Frome, ultimately succeeds because of [Wharton] including the subtle backdrop of Naturalism” is true because without that premise, this story is just a story of one instance that could not teach us much. It is made meaningful by the backdrop of Naturalism because it can be connected to infinite stories or circumstances. The connection teaches us about ourselves and the humans around us. By “exploring the complexity of human emotion against the fundamentals of Nature”, we see how similar we are to Nature and how closely bonded to it each one of us is. The Naturalism found in the book points out and helps us to understand our helplessness, savageness and instinctive desires. On page 103 of Ethan Frome, Zeena is described as a “listless creature”, an “alien presence” with a habit of “silent brooding”. These descriptions are very animalistic and for the first time Ethan realizes that Zeena is like Nature, she can give him everything and also “[take] everything else from him”. Zeena not only gave Ethan Mattie, but the ability to love and feel passion. Ethan feels that Zeena has “mastered him”, similar to how earlier on in the book a snowstorm masters the whole town who is powerless against it. Ethan understands his helplessness around Zeena and it brings out a rage he has never felt before. A “flame of hate” rises up in him and he has to mentally restrain himself from his physical urges after taking a “wild step” towards Zeena. This specific passage shows the struggle between the mind and natural urges. By exploring human emotion against Naturalism, it becomes apparent how primitive humans are and how vulnerable we are to both Nature and our emotions.

Edith Wharton quite deliberately brings together human emotion and the environment in her novella Ethan Frome. The characters are circumscribed by the environment in which they exist and the impossibility of escape from the environmental forces of nature, heredity and place shape the characters of the text. A moment of hope arises as Mattie and Ethan walk home together from the dance and a more romantic sense of possibility emerges. The reader is drawn to the love of Ethan and Mattie quite subtly – it grows almost organically from innocent moments shared and this is perhaps why the reader does not see their ‘affair’ as adulterous. We share the hope that glimmers in the bleak cold that is Starkfield and its characters.…

Paragraph 7 contributes to the ideas in the text by showing that people got violent when others were just trying to make a change for the good. In paragraph 7 sentence 5 the author states, "When the buses reached Anniston, Alabama, an angry mob slashed the tires on one bus and set it aflame." The integrated black and white students were trying to take a stand and make a change. Yes, the people were breaking the law by driving all together, but others did not have to put them in danger for trying to make a change and do something right. This shows that others were breaking the law just as much as the integrated students.…

Ethan’s life in a rural environment, suppressed the opportunity for him to become someone. (quote about Ethan not going to college). Ethan stays in Starkfield to aid his ill parents alongside his distant cousin Zenobia, “she’s always been the greatest hand at doctoring in the country” (Wharton 13). As a result of the crippling winter Ethan asks Zeena to stay with him after his mother’s passing and “in turn could do no less than marry her” (63). This was Ethan’s first mistake. Ethan had the chance handed to him to go and put himself through college and sell the farm; sadly Ethan’s sense of obligations prevailed. (Quote…

The novel Ethan From by Edith Wharton tells the story of Ethan From and the tragedy he faces in his life. The story mainly focuses on the relationships between and among Ethan, his wife, and his wife’s cousin, with whom he is in love. Wharton uses different literary devices to develop the plot, including irony as one of the most effective. The use of irony in the novel, especially in the climatic sledding scene, greatly adds to the development of the tragedy.…

The choices a person can make in a single heart beat can affect their entire life. Life can be cruel and unforgiving. Ethan Frome written by Edith Wharton and published in 1911 is a concrete example of how life can be a tragedy. The novel is about how Ethan Frome became disabled and the choice he had made decades ago that lead to the accident—or how the locals in the story prefer to call it as Ethan’s “smash-up.” His accident was the conclusion to his escape from his miserable life with an impossible love. Unfortunately, his choice did not go as plan and permanently impacted the lives of his sick wife Zenobia, his love interest Mattie, and Ethan himself. Another example of life being cruel and unforgiving is in the film Harold and Maude released in 1971. The film displays a young man fixated with death named Harold and his short-lived relationship with a woman on the verge of becoming 80 years old, Maude. Harold just like Ethan found an impossible love interest with Maude. Maude did not want to live pass 80 and decided to die on her own terms. Life is not always sunshine and happy-ending like those in fairy tales, Ethan and Harold are completely different characters but have a few parallels in common.…

Edith Warton made the novel a journey. A filmmaker needs to work extremely hard to create a piece with a strong story line, characterization, twists and a stupendous ending. How are these elements portrayed? Through the elements of media of course. In the pilot episode of “Freaks and Geeks,” it is undeniable that the use of lighting, music and camera manipulation are utilized to create pathos between the characters and the audience. Music evidently plays a grand part of setting the tone and emotion in a scene whether it is to heighten suspense, set a romantic mood or pick up the pace for an action scene. Prior to the ambush of the school bully Alan in the episode of “Freaks and Geeks,” the music slowed into a dramatic melody with heroic lyrics and an altogether “we are going into battle,” feel. This use of music is highly effective in relaying the sense of finality to the viewers, the geeks are finally going to stand up to the bully. It gives everything a battle-ready atmosphere which is perfect for the before-the-fight mood. Furthermore, the use of different camera angles and distances plays a large part in creating sympathy or empathy between the viewer and character as seen when Sam struggles to ask his crush, Cindy out for the Homecoming Dance. The close-up on his face is used to allow viewers to clearly see the hesitancy in his gaze, the nervous way he bites his lip and the internal struggle to find courage and pursue his dream. Without being able to truly see his emotions, viewers would likely be less empathetic towards his cause and not root for him as strongly had the camera been so far as to not being able to see his face. Lastly, another important aspect of media elements that was used frequently throughout the episode is lighting. During the scene where Lindsay’s in Nick’s garage, the lights are dim and soft and the romantic, deep atmosphere is created. It was during this scene where Nick tells Lindsay about his dreams and his passion for drumming, the…

    paragraph 175

Paragraph 175 is a documentary about the homosexuals that were singled and killed for being who they were. Most of them had resided in Berlin during the 1920’s and during that time that’s what the town was known for homosexuals until the Nazi’s came into power. When I watched the movie Paragraph 175 my first reaction was disbelief in the regards of how they were treated. I got teary eyed for the simple fact that these grown men and the exception of the one women, were still torn by the events that took place. I thought the movie had some unnecessary parts in the beginning as far as showing nude pictures of guys I really asked myself were those even needed. The words alone that the victims were saying was enough to make the movie to me. The victims not only suffered the torture inside the camp, but they had to deal with the pain when it was all over. Heinz F. said when he got liberated he couldn’t even go to anyone to talk to about what happened to him. When he tried no one would listen they would brush him off saying it’s over now get over it in so many words. His father had passed away about time he got out and to him that was the only person he felt would listen. When I saw him break down and cry it put me to tears because I felt his pain on a personal level not necessarily the same subject but I felt him. There has been times I was hurting inside and the only person I felt would listen and understand live in North Carolina and that also was my dad. Life after the holocaust I think was the roughest part for these homosexuals. Some spent up to 8 years in the camps. Don’t get me wrong those weren’t the best of times for those survivors but having to live with the shame, broken hearts and in one’s case Pierre Seel was tortured by the Nazi. They stuck 25 centimeters of wood up his butt. If you heard how torn he was and didn’t even get teary eyed I question if you’re human. I asked my tutor did she even know about…

    Night paragraph

I enjoyed reading Night by Elie Wiesel because it takes a deeper look into what happened in the Holocaust during World War II. Since the novel is a personal story, we really get to see the actual events that happened within the Holocaust. We get a close up view of the traumatizing events. During the novel, the author tells the story of how his family was separated and never reunited. This really shows the reader how you should never take life for granted. One day you are alive, the next you could be dead. Everyone has been close to someone who has passed away, but during the Holocaust, every Jew lost a family member or close friend, and some people lost everyone. It helps to show you that life can change in a blink of an eye. This helped me to appreciate my life more. Also, this story shows how people can change when they are put into different circumstances. When you are put in a situation where your survival is at risk, you start to focus on yourself. We see this multiple times throughout the story. Near the start, when the Jews are put into cattle cars for transportation to the concentration camps, a Jewish lady was screaming “fire” continuously. The other Jews beat her in front of her son in order to get her to be quiet. They didn't want to get in trouble for her screaming. Another example is in the middle of the story when Elizer's attitude starts to change towards his father and his faith. He is concentrating at that moment on his own survival, rather than Idek's treatment of his father. His father's inability to dodge a beating from Idek only makes Elizer angry at his father. Elizer's religion rebellion intensifies at this point and he can't find a reason to bless God anymore. Where as at the beginning of the story Elizer lived for God. A third example of changing relationships and attitudes is when the Rabbi's son abandons his father. When the son believes that his father won't survive, he moves to protect…

By denying Zeena a single positive attribute while presenting Mattie as the epitome of glowing, youthful attractiveness, Wharton renders Ethan’s desire to cheat on his wife perfectly understandable. The conflict does not stem from within Ethan’s own heart—his feelings for Mattie never waver. Instead, the conflict occurs between his passions and the constraints placed on him by society, which control his conscience and impede his fulfillment of his…

    The Road Paragraph

Cormac McCarthy through his writing shows that the situation of the man and boy is dire. In the beginning, the man wakes up to a “dark… cold… night” in the woods (McCarthy 3). This shows that the man and his son are out of their home wandering, or lost because no one sleeps in the woods when it is cold. In the first “gray light”, the land is given to be “barren [and] silent” with “ash blowing loosely over the blacktop” (McCarthy 4). That description depicts loneliness as well as helplessness, because the only thing moving is ash; moreover, the gray diction is for loss of hope and the deep silence has a negative connotation attached also. Therefore, without the needed supplies in a harsh the pair is left I in a life or death situation.…
