Dress Codes
Dress codes are a big deal at many schools and there are also many ways to punish someone who violates the code. But, one way that is very effective is public shaming. Public shaming changes their feelings in a direct way, and in the end, all the students are able to focus more on school and not on what they are wearing. Public shaming is definitely an effective form of punishment, especially in Junior Highs and High Schools. First, public shaming is a direct negative to the violator with real consequences at the school where the violation took place. It definitely is a deterrent as it makes people not want to violate again. For example, if they are shamed publicly they will not want to go through that again. Some kids will only learn from this type of direct punishment. It serves the further purpose of letting everyone know that violations of the dress code will not be tolerated. Kids feelings will be moved and the violator and others will think twice before doing it again. Second, the shaming of a student can directly impact the students feelings. When a kids feelings are hurt, or they are moved, the student will think twice before doing it again. If a student is ashamed of what they are wearing they would want to get out of that situation by not doing it again. It is easier to focus in a class to get your mind on your work if you do not violate the code. Finally, a student will work harder and better, and so will the students around them, when they are not worried about what they and everyone else is wearing. Being able to focus more on school work will cause grades to go up. High School is difficult enough, following the dress code gives you one less thing to worry about so you can focus on your work. In conclusion, public shaming is useful because it makes them not want to do it again. It is an effective way to move the students feelings. Finally, it is a deterrent to the offender and to all students. Compliance will allow them and the other students to concentrate on school work.
