1. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?

Groups or people can be identified by a number of different ways. The following is a snap shot of some of the ways that minority or subordinate groups are often identified by;

1. Racial Groups - according to Schaefer (2012) a racial group is defined by “ a group that is socially set apart because of obvious physical differences.” (p. 7) 2. Ethnic Group – according to Schaefer (2012) an ethnic group is defined as “a group set apart from others because of its national origin or distinctive cultural patterns.” (p. 8) 3. Religious Group – according to Schaefer (2012) religious groups are formed by “association with a religion other than the dominant faith.” (p. 8)

2. Why do people label and group other people?

The term “label” more symbolizes an action, not an actual concept. The process of labeling is widely known and used every day, in order to distinguish one product from another. In society, the act of “labeling” a group or an individual is done to identify and establish differences between one’s self and the other group or individual in question. People will label one another or groups of people to develop their social status in comparison to those who they are labeling.
