What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society?
Ageism is defined as prejudice and discrimination against older people. Aging is defined as the process of growing old or developing the appearance and characteristics of old age. And disability is defined as having a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activity. Schafer writes that for the ageist, elderly persons reflect the image of disease, death, and dying as well as a reminder that we will all be old one day. (2012, pp. 395-396). What is the Age Discriminitation in Employment Act (ADEA)? How does the ADEA address issues for the aging population?
The age and Discrimination in Emplotyment Act (ADEA) is a law that protects workers 40 years and older from being fired due to their age, [ and then replaced by a younger worker that would presumably receive a lower rate of pay for the same job. The ADEA has gone so far as taking companies to court to prove they fired employees for reasons of being to old. The act also work the other way if an older person is hire in place of a younger, the discrimintation is stil the same and is upheld by this law. Even with the law in place the elderly are still fighting for their rights.
