Write a 100- to 200-word response to each of the following questions. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

Discrimination is the denial of opportunites and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. Prejudice is a negative attitude towards an entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority. Stereotypes are unreliable, exaggerated generalizations about all members of a group that do not take individual differences into account. I believe that discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping because, when we discriminate against someone we deny them opportunities or equal rights and when we prejudice or stereotype we just hold negative attitudes and make up or believe unreliable, exaggerated generalizations about members of a group or ethnic minorities.

What are the causes of discrimination?

The causes of discriminaiton can sometimes result from prejudices held by individuals, or from the stereotypes we hold and believe about individuals and groups. However, I truly believe that discrimination really comes from our parents, families, providers, or the people who we look up to. Growing up I witnessed my father discriminated against African Americans, on many different occasions, this lead me to believe that my father was acting certains ways against this ethnic group people that’s the way we were suppose to. I am thankful for my mother who truly taught me that what my father was doing is discrimination and we should not discriminate against anyone, because everyone is human and deserves to be treated equal and fairly.

How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another? How are they

Discrimination is the making of a difference in treatment or favor on a basis other than individual merit (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Our world has always been faced with the problem of discrimination. It is one of the most discussed topics nowadays and throughout history. In all countries there is most likely at least one type of discrimination that affects different groups of people, but it is still among us especially here in the United States. Throughout the United States, there are millions of people who are struggling against the unethical treatment and views of discrimination. It is not just among races or ethnic groups; it is among different genders, religions, preferences in partners, and different economic qualities. The people of the world today argue that discrimination is not as common as it has been in our country’s history, but is it really? Do people still receive hate mail? Are people ridiculed because they simply differ from each other? These are the questions we must ask ourselves in order to understand that it still lives and exists in today’s world. Discrimination comes in many different forms and classes, but there are only two main types. Though people can be differentiated in several forms of inequity due to their sex, race, color, religion and social status, discrimination only comes in two distinct types. These can be commonly known as direct and indirect.…

Prejudice involves a negative attitude toward individuals based on their membership in a particular group. Discrimination is “treating or acting unfairly toward particular categories of people”. Conflict Research Consortium says “Prejudice and discrimination are negative manifestations of integrative power. Instead of bringing or holding people together, prejudice and discrimination push them apart”. Stereotyping is a “schema that organizes knowledge or perceptions about a category”. A group in which you belong to would be known as your in-group, based off of race, gender, location, beliefs, or social groups such as bowling leagues or fraternity. On another hand a group that you don’t belong to is known as out-group. When it comes to prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping I can relate to discrimination due to the fact that I am a minister, on my job people shun me and think that I am stuck up…

Let me first begin by defining discrimination, racism and ethnicity since these terms are all important terms to understand before going into further discussion. To discriminate is simply defined by yourdictionary.com as: "To make distinctions on the basis of class or category without regard to individual merit; show preference or prejudice." Therefore, discrimination occurs when a person is not treated equally because of their gender, race, religion, ethnic origin, nationality, sexual orientation, or age. Yourdictionary.com defines racism as:…

    * * How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? * Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping by that of discrimination actually takes action. Whereas prejudice and stereotyping are more of making assumption of a person or a race, assuming that they are one way due to their ethnicity or what they heard about them before getting to know them. Discrimination as I stated actually takes action there are so many different types of discrimination that actually take place today. Example: Hate crimes- people do these acts based on a person’s race, religion, or sexual preference. With this form familie’s. Another type of discrimination is institutional discrimination this can hinder someone from being hired because of their past or even color. An institution can hire just one race that controls all the laws over a town, and then make it hard for the minority to live since they may not know what it is like to struggle with everyday life.…
