Eth 125 Week 7 Assignment

I chose to take the Fat - Thin IAT. My data results suggested a slight automatic preference for thin people over fat people. I do feel that the results are correct because I do somewhat have a personal preference for thin people. I am not really sure why I have this preference. I do not think that fat people or nasty or bad nor do not think that all thin people are good. I just prefer thin over fat. I do not discriminate against fat people or chose thin people over fat people. There a several overweight people in my family that I love dearly and as long as they are happy with themselves, I am fine with it. I am not thin myself right now. I have always been a thin, petite person up until a couple years ago. I had to have surgery and then was required to take medications that caused me to gain excessive weight rapidly. It has been a struggle for me to get this weight off. It sure was a lot easier to put it on doing nothing than trying to get it off. I understand that fat people are often judged by their size and not who they really are. I would never do or say anything to hurt them because you never know what their situation or the reasons behind them being overweight. I can relate to overweight people because of my own situation and I have experienced the negativity from others.

Project Implicit was designed to be used for educational purposes including self-education. It investigates and helps you to understand your thoughts and feelings outside of your conscious awareness and conscious control. The Fat -Thin IAT has been researched over the past 10 years. Twenty-five percent of participants scored in the strong automatic preference for thin people, twenty-seven percent in the moderate, eighteen percent in the slight, nineteen in the little to no preference between fat and thin people, seven percent in slight preference for fat people, four percent in the moderate and one percent in the strong category.

Prejudice is defined as an opinion, judgment, preconceived preference or idea formed beforehand or without knowledge of facts. Prejudice is a "feeling, favorable or unfavorable, toward a person or thing, prior to, or not based on, actual experience. Discrimination is a prejudicial treatment or consideration of a person, group, race or category instead of on an individual merit. Discrimination is the act of prejudice against a person because they have a certain set of characteristics. It is bias, prejudice, unfair or unequal treatment against someone for logical or illogical reasons.

In my opinion, it is very hard to measure prejudice because of the rules and regulations that we must follow in society. In the work place and other public agencies there are policies that must be followed regarding prejudice and discrimination. Everyone must be given a fair chance no matter what their race, sex, age, disability, origin, political belief or religious background.
