In this essay I am going to be assessing the character Curleys Wife from Steinbeck’s book Of Mice And Men. The book is set in the 1930s during the Great Depression it features two farm workers called George and Lennie. The travel around together in search of work sharing a dream of a place of their own, a small ranch where they can live and work for themselves. It tells the story of how violence may erupt to destroy those dreams. Curleys wife is a character in the book who from the brief encounters with her is presented in two ways. Firstly the dangerous, flirtatious character who isn’t trusted by the rest of the ranch workers but then later one we realize how she is just a victim of loneliness with her being the only girl on the ranch and how she too has an incomplete American Dream to pursue an acting career. Curleys wife is a very important character and is heavily involved in the outcome of the story when George ends up shooting Lennie however there is the question of her innocence.…

In the song “Car Radio” by Twenty One Pilots, there is a lyric that says “I find over the course of our human existence, one thing consists of consistence, and it's that we're all battling fear.” In this quote it talks about how through our human existence we have had to deal with fear. Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett rewrote The Diary of Anne Frank to make it a play. In this play, eight people go into hiding in a secret annex to protect themselves from the Nazi’s during The Holocaust. The strongest theme in the play is, when you are in difficult conditions, being positive and finding light in the situation will help you to survive. This theme is well supported throughout the play.…

Wharton depicts Zeena as old, cold, and insensitive while Mattie is warm, loving, kind, and most importantly, a much more fitting wife for Ethan. Symbolism is used in the form of Mattie’s red scarf to give Mattie a sense of life and loving warmth, while at the same time giving Zeena a colder appearance. Therefore, Wharton makes Ethan’s desire to leave his ghastly wife for another woman considerate in the eyes of the reader. Yet, just like in the case of his engineering career, Ethan cannot bear to leave Zeena, on the account that society would severely frown upon a husband that abandons his sickly wife. He is torn between following what he knows is the “right” thing to do, and following what he knows will make him happy. It is important to note that his love for Mattie never falters—The conflict is external, not internal. He is afraid of what people would think, and not whether or not he loves Mattie. Although he has one night alone with Mattie, he cannot stop thinking about all of the responsibilities placed on him. His strong desire for Mattie eventually leads to the shattering of his marriage, which is symbolized by the shattering of Zeena’s prized wedding red pickle…

Of Mice and Men is a book that has a bad vibe towards it. However, John Steinbeck's masterpiece shows a world where the simplest dream can be extremely hard to achieve. Steinbeck shows that the 1930s are a place in time that cant even be imagined in this modern time. The novella shows how the characters deals with the feeling of uncertainty and of loneliest, each character has their way of dealing with it. Every characters have their only and well defined personality, with a the varieties personalities some will have good morals and others will have bad morals. Characters will be victims or villains and some may even be both, one must understand the different time period. One good person that stands out is Lennie, Lennie is a person…

The other main character, Liza, though not as reprehensible as the Underground Man, is also fallen. Dostoevsky implies that she may have been sold into prostitution by her own parents, and the reader is compelled to great sympathy at her plight. But, even so, she continues to sell her virtue to male degenerates in a filthy brothel under cover of night. A wicked “paradoxilist”XX and a tragic prostitute – though these descriptions may represent the most obvious account of each character, it seems that both Liza and the Underground Man have been given additional roles to play in this story that may be less evident, but not less important.…

    Alfred Rosenberg

Alfred Rosenberg was nothing if not eccentric. It says quite a bit about his thought process when Hitler stopped taking advice from him because he was not as practical. It is very interesting that even Hitler thought he was crazy. Rosenberg was a strong supporter of the Nazi party and worked hard to align himself with Hitler and held several leadership positions within the party. When Hitler was imprisoned in 1924 he appointed Rosenberg as the head of the party and when Rosenberg stood by Hitler in the Beer Hall Putsch Hitler made him a member of the Blood Order. In 1929 Rosenberg organized and became the leader of Combat League for German Culture. This group was in charge of creating and enforcing Nazi ideas on aesthetics and literary arts. In 1934 Hitler rewarded him for his work on aesthetics and placed him in charge of the Office for Supervision of the Total Intellectual and Ideological Schooling and Education of the National Socialist German Workers Party. Then in 1941 he was given the position of Reich Minister for the Eastern Territories. This made him in charge of the civil administration for all German occupied lands in Eastern Europe. While he occasionally protested against SS brutality in the Ukraine he fully cooperated with orders for the Final Solution. It was for direct involvement in this that led to him being convicted and hanged as a war criminal.…

This story is written in third person narrative, there initially appears to be no emotional pull in the way the story is told though it is rich in descriptives of place and setting, from this you get a sense of being hemmed in, an atmosphere almost of despair. Despite the fact that no real emotional ties seem to be present at first glance, and maybe because of this fact the reader is left to feel the emotional undercurrent. I feel that the author has more invested in the emotions of this piece and this puts it at odds to the narrator. There is some speculation that this story is in fact based on John Steinbeck’s relationship with his wife Carol (Stanwood, 2008) and alludes to a short affair she had with a friend of Steinbeck’s wife’s boss. Throughout the story we get to know Elisa Allen, her dreams and desires are laid bare not so much through thought or words but by her actions and her surrounds. Elisa’s conversation with her husband Henry just adds to the impression that she is a woman who wants to…

In the text ‘I am not Esther’ written by Fleur Beale a character I liked was Kirby Greenland. I liked Kirby because she taught me about the themes of loyalty, deception and a sense of your own identity. I liked Kirby because she had experiences a lot of changes in her life. The most significant change was finding her own identity as she grew and developed as a teenager. She was always determined to find her mother even when it felt like there was a brick wall at the end of the road. I also liked Kirby because she stayed true to who she really is even when she was forced to be someone who she really isn’t and also Kirby is also caring and always there if someone needs her. I am not Esther is about a loving mother and daughter relationship torn apart as a mother had to leave her life behind and leave her life and moves to Africa, but later we discovers that really she is still in the country but in a mental hospital. Her daughter has been told to stay with relatives that he has never heard of but they are no ordinary family, as they are members from a strict, very religious cult. They have changed her name from Kirby to Esther and forced to follow the severe set of social standards by the elders have created. They cannot interact with the normal outside world as there is no television, no radio, no newspaper and no mirrors. She is forced to wear long, modest clothing. She has no idea where her mother is and is beginning to question her own…
