Esther Eggertsen: The Influence On Martha's Story

The first lady that inspired me was Martha Griffiths. Martha and her husband, Hick, where a political couple and both very involved with politics. One day, Martha got a call to run for state legislature and that is when her career really picked up. Marthas story inspires me for many reasons, one being her husband was never trying to hold her back and he wanted what was truly best for her. Hick treated Martha has an equal and they did everything together. Through Martha's whole career she never forgot about her husband and was completely dedicated to him. “Griffiths estimated that she talked to 40,000 prospective voters in her first unsuccessful race in 1952. Not only did she work to better factory working conditions for women, she became very good friends with John Kennedy. When John became president, Esther became one of the first labor-union officials to support him. Esther had always been treated poorly by past jobs and Esther was done putting up with. She wanted to make a change and that she did. Esther's husband was dying with cancer around the time Kennedy had won so Esther wanted a job she would feel comfortable doing. When Kennedy had asked her what job she would like Esther said she would like to work in the Women's Bureau. “The department of Labor- Women's Bureau was the traditional spot where presidents stashed a female appointee deserving of a policy-making position. It was suppose to fight for better working conditions for women, but it also frequently and defensively acknowledged that no job should take second place to domestic duties” (Collins 70). Esther was frequently reminded of how little importance the Women's Bureau actually was, but that didn't seem to phase her, she brushed it off and got the job
I think women excel at, multitasking, remembering things, and managing things. Women serve has better leaders than men because women can multitask and men really cannot, for example some women have to cook dinner while helping their child with homework. Women also are better about remembering things, we remember birthdays, anniversaries, almost anything that is important, we remember. Boys on the other hand are alway forgetting birthdays and anniversaries. Women are also really good and managing things and being organized. Not all women, but most keep things very neat, clean, and easy to find. Whereas men they just throw something down or just put everything in one
