Cristina’s Non-Conformity is an Outward Expression of Her Bravery and Fortitude. According to Albert Einstein, “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex; it takes the touch of a genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction” (Einstein 99). In the Novel Lives of the Saints by Nino Ricci, Cristina portrays the qualities of a determined and independent woman who is not afraid to make decisions that may affect her life or to communicate her feelings. Cristina’s refusal to accept village standards, conventions, rules and laws, despite the immense pressures from the villagers of Valle del Sole to conform, is not rooted in pride but rather demonstrates her commitment to her own personal convictions. Cristina breaks the stereotype for women in Valle del Sole. Cristina does not get the respect she deserves from the villagers of Valle del Sole, and therefore proves herself by standing up for her beliefs. Cristina’s true beliefs and convictions in herself, expresses her outward courage and self-determination. Although, Cristina accepts the fact that she is being unfaithful to her husband and is sleeping with the blue-eyed man, she still carries on with her life, not worried about what anyone has to say. Cristina is also regarded as a sinner but in an actual sense she is a saint. Villagers of Valle del Sole have begun to reinforce these stereotypes about women and blame Cristina for her non-conformity because they are envious of her apparent freedom and independent nature. Cristina however, challenges male dominance with her affair as they try to ignore and not acknowledge her. According to Cristina, “she has suffered every day of her life, but has never walked through the town hanging her head in shame” (Ricci 149). She breaks the stereotype for women as women in those days did not have the guts to put their chins up and stand up for their beliefs because of the traditional customs they followed in Valle del Sole....
