Essay Why College Athletes Should Not Be Paid
Most people don’t know that only 23 college universities have the money to pay all of their athletes, according to the List Land webpage. The topic of college athletes being paid has always been a debatable topic, and is still to this day. Paying athletes isn’t smart because most athletes already receive a scholarship, playing college sports is a privilege, and last but not least, college athletes are irresponsible with their money. Therefore, college athletes should not be paid.

No doubt that college athletes are phenomenal at what they do, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they should be paid. Being paid should only be for professional athletes. Since college sports are important, most athletes already receive a scholarship from their university.

Only 62 percent of students in general check their bank account, yet alone college athletes. That definitely shows how irresponsible and careless college athletes and students with their money. A website says, “ Only about 62 percent of students at a four year school check their bank account balances and only 39 percent of these students use a budget,” (ListLand para. 24). Finally, college athletes are just irresponsible and should not get paid for their athletics.

Others may think that paying college players is a great idea. Their reasoning could be that paying athletes a salary will help them learn to manage their personal money. They may also think that paying them will make sports more competitive. However, paying players will only stress them out, since most of them do not check or even use a bank account. Paying athletes is not good and should never happen.

All in all, paying college athletes is a very debatable topic and is very interesting. Paying players is a bad idea and should never happen. Reasons for this are that most athletes already receive a scholarship, and playing sports in college is a privilege. Also, athletes are very irresponsible with their money. Overall, paying college athletes should not happen now, nor should it happen in the future

The side I agree with is pros, which means yes college athletes should get paid. I think this because they should get the money the need. I say this because college athletes will have to do two things, And it may come to having to leave your sport activity early or quitting the job, And do you really want to do any of those? Also because they maybe have a family to take care of and they can't do it without money right? Maybe even have a family member that's hurt/ dieing/ or even dead. And you have to go to the funeral or go help them and see if they're doing ok.…

If colleges were to pay athletes there would be no fair way to distribute the money. Athletes perform their sport at different levels of ability and for various lengths of time. In addition, not every player is able to compete in a game. Problems would arise about the athlete not playing which would not allow for him/her to receive the money they deserve. The first issue about this problem is that some people believe that athletes should be paid based on an open market system. This idea of an open market system would allow for supply and demand to come into play. In addition, a school would be able to pay their scouted athlete based on the money that comes in because of their ability. However, The payment would vary depending on the market along with the deals that each athlete has with the school. The second issue is about the colleges because not every college can afford the players they want to recruit. In 2013 the NCAA had an investigation on the economic stability of Division 1 sport programs. This study showed that out of 288 Division 1 schools only 23 were running their programs in a profitable way. This means that only those 23 schools had the money to pay a college athlete. In our society, any business not profiting from anything is likely not hiring, and there is no idea…

In the article that I read I would have to agree with the author. College players should be paid, just because some of them get free education don’t mean that they shouldn’t get paid. Whether college athletes should get paid to play college sports is still to be determined. Some people say that college athletes should get paid because everybody else such as the coaches, the NCAA, and the college are all getting paid. Also some people say they shouldn’t get paid because the students didn’t go to college to get paid they went to get a degree. The pros of paying college athletes is college athletes would be able to provide for their family, and they would be able to pay for hospital cost just in case of a serious injury. Some fans do not want the players to be paid because they feel that the true meaning of being a college athlete would be tarnished. A large majority of people oppose paying the athletes because they see them as students (Alex Prewitt). Also, fans want the “amatuer” label to matter (Dom Amore). Spectators believe that the players could let the money affect their game (Adriano Valente). Student-Athletes could let all the money get the best of them which would lead them to forget the reason why they are playing in college (Adriano Valente). Their youth might cause them to make impulsive decisions as well. For example, former NFL first round draft pick, Travis Taylor, spent $40,000 in a furniture store after he received his first rookie paycheck (Tom Farrey). Athletes have a history of wasting their money by spending it on items that distract them from their sport. Young athletes are already prone to making bad choices, giving them money could make their choices lead to severe consequences. However, paying the athletes would help the college and the athlete. Paying college athletes now is the right thing to do because it will give those who fail to be…

Over the past decades, what has continued to be one of the most debatable issues in the world of sports is whether or not college football players should get paid. My honest opinion is football that players should receive a certain proportion of money because of the service that college athletes provide to the institution they attend. In addition, they should be rewarded in a reasonable manner after putting their bodies out on the line, bringing in a tremendous amount of money, it will help with the football athletes to begin creating a sense of financial awareness, and finally it will attract more talented athletes.…

Some people believe they should not be paid because the already receive scholarships to a university which everything is suppose to be payed for. Top colleges athletes already get plenty of benefits, such as scholarships and free tutoring. (Scholastic News 2). However, this is not necessarily always true. Although some universities offer athletic scholarships, they do not pay for all expenses (Time for Kids 3). They are not necessarily getting paid, yes they are getting tuition money for school, rooms, and books, but they are not receiving money to help them if they have an injury, buy clothes, or food. Other people believe college is a place for learning, not earning. If college athletes get paid, they may not be motivated to focus on their schoolwork (Time for Kids 3). Again, this is not necessarily true. Yes, college is a place for learning. But college athletes are focusing and learning for their career they chosen, sports. If they are paid, they will be highly motivated because if they fail their schoolwork, they cannot compete in their sport. Many of the reasons to not pay college athletes are…

Others might say that college athletes shouldn’t be paid because scholarships cover everything for school. Although, the scholarships often forget to cover everything. They cover most, but often do not fully cover meal plans, which can leave even a full-scholarship athlete in a mountain of debt. They might also say that not paying college athletes is the proper thing to do because it isn’t like they are on a professional sports team. I would say otherwise. College sport are not technically considered ‘professional’, but they should be. Awesome players, working together on an awesome team, against other awesome players, working together on another awesome team. Combine that with the fact that their sports are on TV, and it sounds professional to me, and probably to a lot of other people…
