“We must dare to be great; and we must realize that greatness is the fruit of toil and sacrifice and high courage.” - Teddy Roosevelt. With all of that America has done for us, this is very kosher. America has given us gifts that we can't even conduct our life without them. There are scores of them, some are education, freedom, and voting.…
The Simple Gift, a novel by Steven Herrick, is based on the journey of a teenage boy named Billy. The book highlights that material possessions are not all that matters, and that often it is a sense of belonging that really shines through during desperate times. Sometimes money even if earnt can be valueless, freedom can be found easier if you lack physical possessions, and simply letting go of the past and leaving it behind can lead to you finding happiness through better, stronger relationships.…
In the poem “Ode to My Socks,” the poet writes, “I resisted the mad impulse to put them into a golden cage.” In this poem the poet loves his handmade socks from Maru so much that he doesn't want to wear the pair of socks because of how warm and soft they are. In the song “The Gift” Jim sings, “You gave your love away .... for the gift.” In this song it delivers a message of putting love into people, and also gifts. Then receiving those gifts of love back. In both the poem, and the song, they put their love into a form of a gift. Which then gives the person receiving the gift the same feelings of deep affection of the creator. Another connection I made between the song and poem is when Jim Brickman sang, “But the colors will fade away.” And when the poet writes, “Like explores in the jungle who have over the very rare green deer to the spit and eat it with remorse.” In both it describes how the socks and deer meat will not be warm, and tasty forever before it spoiled, but the love and taste for them will never…

Initially my understanding of belonging was to conform to groups and individuals you want to ‘belong’ to and that where you belong contributes to your identity. However my understanding of belong has developed since then. Belonging is a concept of an individual being accepted unconditionally. A person’s identity is represented by what they pride themselves in. This is shown through the text, ‘The Simple Gift,’ by Steven Herrick as Billy does not pride himself from where he belongs but from his identity. Billy yearns to be accepted for who he is.…
In a world of no differences, a young twelve year old boy named Jonas is chosen to bear the weight of all of humanity's memories. This book takes place sometime in the future when we humans have totally lost everything that makes us, us. Because we were able to figure out a way to erase all emotions and memories from ourselves, we created a place believed to be a utopia. Jonas is just a regular boy living in his community with his mother, father, and sister. On the day of the ceremony of twelves, things change drastically for him. He is chosen to be the next Receiver of Memory. Jonas soon starts his training by being transmitted the world's memories from the Giver, the current Receiver of Memory. He soon learns much about the past and realizes that things aren't perfect in his current world.…
The average person knows very little of death; it is a feared topic and not openly discussed. We misunderstand the process, do not know what to expect, and there is great mystery surrounding the end of life. The authors saw a much-needed chance to educate the public, to allow them to learn from death, even to appreciate it as a natural part life. The patient does not know what they are facing, and are burdened with extreme fear. Many have unresolved issues in their lives, and these can be the source of great agitation and even panic as they approach the end. The caregivers, both family and the medical team, use medication to ease physical pain but this is often not enough to produce peace. The authors know…

Belonging is a controlling force influenced by our personal situation and is characterised by the understanding of our relationships and interactions with others.
