Essay On The Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup originated in Canada after Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley of Preston decided that since the sport was so popular there should be a form of championship between the teams. Lord Stanley donated a silver bowl to the Ametuer Hockey Association of Canada for the prize of the championship. The cup was originally called the Dominion Challenge Trophy, but was soon renamed the Stanley Hockey Championship Cup in 1893 after its founder. That same year it was decided that the Stanley Cup could not be owned by any of the winning hockey teams and went to whoever won the championship that year.
Originally, the championship was held between the ametuer teams and the first winner of the championship cup was the Montreal AAA. The Montreal AAA won seven times in a row before five of the teams were tied at the end of the season. Since then the top teams have been sent to the Stanley Cup playoffs to determine a winner. After the first exclusively professional league, the Toronto Trolley Leaguers, was founded in 1908, they played the for the Stanley Cup and tied four times before losing to the Wanderers. The Stanley Cup has also been remodeled a couple times to prevent the trophy from becoming too big or too heavy. The names that are engraved onto the trophy are hand chiseled letter by letter to form winning team’s participants. The original Stanley Cup bowl retired in 1970 to the hockey hall of fame and a replica built in 1963 has been used since. The Stanley Cup has been around for more than a hundred years and brings great traditions with it. Every player on the winning team gets the trophy for one day and can do anything they want with it. The trophy has been used as a drinking cup, in baptisms, as a cereal bowl, been taken across the world, and

One famous game in NHL history was the Easter Epic of 1987. That game was game 7 of a series between the Washington Capitals and the New York Islanders. It went into 4 overtimes. The game was started on April 18(that’s why it was nicknamed the Easter Epic) and ended on April 19, Easter morning. It is now the longest game 7 in NHL history. Another great game during the NHL season is the Winter Classic. It is, actually, relatively new. The very first Winter Classic was played between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres in Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York on January 1, 2008. The game is pretty much always played on New Year’s Day every year. The star player of the Pittsburgh Penguins at the time, and still is now, was…

Firstly, the 1972 Summit Series proved that Canada is the greatest hockey nation ever. “The NHL long regarded itself as the world's elite, but the overwhelming superiority of the Soviet Union in international amateur play in the 1960s led to a dramatic 1972 summit series between Team Canada (Canadian NHL players) and the Soviet national team,” (Columbia encyclopaedia, sixth edition). This tells us how before the series the Soviet Union was known as the best international team ever. This series came into play to show who was truly better. Canada ended up winning so it turns out that we are a better hockey nation. “Here’s a shot. Henderson makes a wild stab for it and falls,” Foster Hewitt breathlessly described. “Here’s another shot. Right in front. They score!! Henderson has scored for Canada!” (1972summitseries.com). This quote is when Henderson scored the goal that would put them ahead in the final game of the serious and the goal that would make them win the series! This proves that Canada is the greatest hockey nation because they won the series with this goal. “What that team did, I don’t think there has been a greater feat in sports. It was an unbelievable comeback against a great Russian team. I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Bobby Orr (1972 Summit Series Quotes). This quote came from one of the greatest hockey players of all time, so that makes it very special. Bobby Orr is explaining how the…

The maple leaf is Canada's most prominent symbol, symbolizing Canada all around the world. In as early as 1700s, the symbol came about before the first European settlers visited Canada. According to Ross Bernstein, fighting has been part of hockey since it was first created in 1800’s. When the NHL was created in 1917, it was a very rough game where “players had to stickhandle through a gauntlet of flailing fists and elbows, high sticks, and outstretched legs, ready to kick or trip them as they skated by.” The game has cleaned up a lot since then but when the chance came to ban fighting in 1922, The league created rule 56 which only gave a five minute penalty to anyone who engaged in “fisticuffs.” This is when fighting officially became part of hockey (Bernstein 3,4).…

The game of hockey wouldn't be possible without the puck. The hockey puck is made out of vulcanized rubber. The puck weighs six ounces and is similar to a short cylinder. The puck was first recorded being used Febuary 7th, 1876, but was used decades before (MentalFloss.com). Each hockey game is played on a slab of concrete topped with insulation and finished…

Chills running up my spine, rapid foggy breathes expelling in front of me like a car on a cold morning. The clock running down second by second with green illumination, it said we only played 4 periods of hockey, but truly we played 6 with triple overtime. I feel exhausted and wonder how much more I can give without collapsing. I grab my water bottle and begin to drink, and the distinct taste of iron from the water in the iron range rolls down my throat. Suddenly one of our players starts with full steam down the ice and his linemates followed, their strides looked simultaneous. Boisterous sounds of my teammates yelling and the sound of the half inch blades digging into the ice echoed through the small arena. The puck carrier begins to ride…

It seemed that all my years of hard work had all come down to this moment. All those days that I would spend hours at the gym, making sure I had made all my shots and perfected every dribble move, not even bothering to take Sunday off because if I wanted to go somewhere with basketball, I would have to eat, sleep and breathe basketball. I refreshed the inbox of my email, and there it was, the decision that would make or break my basketball career. I had tried out for one of the most elite club basketball teams in Wisconsin, Oshkosh Flight 14’s team. I think I clicked on that email about five-hundred times in anticipation while it loaded. I skimmed the first sentence and my jaw dropped on my desk. The words were tattooed to my eyelids, I could…

The Maple Leaf wasn't the only flag Canada had. Prior to the Maple Leaf there was the St. George's cross. The St. Georges Cross was an English Flag of the 15th century. It was flown over Canada when John Cabot reached the east coast of Canada in 1497. Thirty-seven years later, the fleur-de-lis was planted on Canadian Soil when Jacques Cartier landed here and claimed the land for the King of France. The flag was flown until the early 1760's, when Canada was ceded to the United Kingdom. The Royal Union flag (with the Crosses of St. George's and St. Andrew's flags) replaced the fleur-de-lis after 1759.…
